Giacomo is kicked out of Hell’s Kitchen
As I’m watching tonight’s episode of Hell’s Kitchen, I begin to wonder about a few things. The first thing I wondered is if anyone actually thinks that spending the day with Gordon Ramsey is actually a reward? Perhaps I’m shallow, or maybe I just hold a grudge too long, but I would have a really hard time celebrating with someone who spoke to me the way Ramsey speaks to the contestants on the show. I think I’d much rather spend the day doing the laundry than schmoozing with Ramsey.
Second, I’m not so sure I’ve ever seen a reality show with as much bleeps and fussy screens as Hell’s Kitchen. I’m going to sound like my Mother when I say this, but is that the best or only word you can use? At some points in the show there are so many bleeps I can’t understand what is being said, and I’m not able to get the context of the conversation because of the bleeps. Maybe the reunion show on Top Chef came close with the number of bleeps, but not too close.
Next, do you think the food prepared by the contestants in the kitchen for the restaurant patrons is really as bad as Ramsey says it is?
I’m also wondering if the contestants have some self image or self esteem problems. Why do I say this? Why would anyone stand there and take the insults and cursing hurled at them by Ramsey on a regular basis? I have to say that in the three shows I’ve watched of Hell’s Kitchen I could count the complements made by Ramsey on one hand. I take that back – I could probably count them on one finger.
Is Chef Ramsey really as nasty, angry, hostile and disagreeable in real life as he portrays himself to be on the show? I’d really like to believe it is an act, but there’s something telling me it’s not.
Are the contestants really graduates from culinary schools? I’m questioning whether or not they are, because of some of the almost amateurish mistakes that have been made like: Giacomo not turning the gas on for the oven; both Tom and Heather grabbing a pan and burning their hands; using old and not fresh food; using bare hands to serve food while also using the tasting spoon to plate the food (Keith). That was the best – tasting the food and using the same spoon. You’re in a completely visible kitchen. Why oh why would you do that? Maybe that’s not a culinary mistake but a mistake of arrogance (like Ken did in the first episode of Top Chef)? Who knows, but all I can say is yuck!
I guess I should report the results for tonight. The men lost and Chef Ramsey told them to all nominate someone for elimination since there was no “best of the worst” tonight. (Isn’t this slightly reminiscent of The Biggest Loser?) Tom and Giacomo are called out. Tom actually admits that he is not the best cook there (why, oh why, would you say that?). In the end it was Giacomo that was kicked out of the kitchen. Ramsey said if you can’t even turn on an oven how are you going to run a kitchen?
I think I finally figured out what is missing from this show – class. It’s just crass and crude. And that’s probably why we like it!
