Great performances on DWTS tonight in Week 2
Week 2 of Dancing With the Stars had all twelve celebrities back to perform one more time before the first elimination of the season. Tomorrow night one man and one woman will be eliminated. The celebrities were performing either the Quickstep or the Mambo tonight. Here’s my take on the performances, in the order in which they took place.
Steve and Anna. Tonight Steve and Anna danced the Mambo. I love Steve. He’s so much fun, full of life and energy and really seems to be enjoying the whole experience of being on Dancing With The Stars. Unfortunately his dancing wasn’t the best this evening. Len said that you could see that he was trying really hard to do the dance but it just didn’t work out. The judges gave him a score of 16 out of 30.
Cristian and Cheryl. They danced the Quickstep tonight, and it was fast and furious. I liked it and thought it was very entertaining, but the judges didn’t like it quite as much as I did. They did comment that his posture was much improved from last week, but that he had some mis-steps on the footwork. They gave him a score of 20 out of 30.
Monica and Jonathan. I really want Monica to succeed. I loved watching her play tennis and I was excited to hear she would be on the show. She also seems so excited to be there, but it truly is a challenge for her. You can see it. She comes right out and says it. Tonight she and Jonathan danced the Mambo and you could just tell she was very uncomfortable at times with the dance and the performance. She really gave it her all and tried so hard – a fact that Len also agreed with, but the technical performance just wasn’t there. The judges gave her a score of 15 out of 30.
Penn and Kym. Penn and Kym danced the Quickstep tonight. I was interested to see if he brought any magic tricks into the performance this week. Tonight we had a voodoo doll, a tie that floated up, and a so-called fake fall up the stairs on the way backstage to get his scores. I thought that Penn was great. He is such a funny guy and all joking aside, you can see he was trying to improve and do his best in this performance. Len said that you could see he was trying to perform a “proper” Quickstep but that his footwork was really bad. In fact all three judges commented on his poor footwork. He ended up with a 17 out of 30. Len and Carrie Ann gave him 6s while Bruno gave him a 5. I guess he was a bit peeved about the voodoo doll. Who knows.
Priscilla and Louis. Priscilla did a great Foxtrot last week, but I wondered how she would perform in her first Latin round. I though that her Mambo was good but she just seemed to hold back somewhat. I think she was trying to be perfect and that can be a problem in the performance of the Mambo, at least according to Len and Bruno. The judges gave her a score of 21 out of 30, the best score of the night to this point.
Shannon and Derek. I really didn’t want to like Shannon Elizabeth. She’s so gorgeous, has a great body and all that but I’m finding it hard to not like her. She comes across as a really sweet person and she and Derek look great together. Her Quickstep was so good – she just looked the part of a ballroom dancer and did a nice performance. The judges liked her performance – Bruno told her that she is in the game – and gave her a score of 24 out of 30.
Jason and Edyta. I liked Jason last week. I loved his Mambo tonight. I think his competitive nature is coming through, wanting to succeed at what he does. He would not be in the NFL if he was afraid of hard work, putting in long hours, or if he had an attitude where anything less than the best is acceptable. I’m thrilled that Edyta finally has a partner that can put her in the league of being a contender for the title. Yes I loved Cameron last season but he is no where in the same league as Jason. The judges loved him. Carrie Ann said he was a real contender for the title, and Bruno called him the Mambo King. They rewarded his performance with a score of 27 out of 30.
Marissa and Tony. She is just so much fun to watch. I was interested to see how she approached the Quickstep. It was so sad to see how upset she was at first, because she couldn’t do a death drop like Priscilla or put her leg up in the air like Shannon. I just wanted to hug Tony when he said there was no one else he wanted to perform with. I thought she did a great job. The judges noticed some mistakes or mis-steps that I did not see, but I thought overall she was great. Len and Bruno said she was much improved from last week which I was happy to hear. I just hope she isn’t the female celebrity eliminated tomorrow night. The judges gave her a score of 21 out of 30.
Adam and Julianne. Adam is certainly fun to watch, and I was interested to see how Julianne choreographed the Mambo to play to his strengths. Since his strengths are not dancing the dance took advantage of his personality and attitude. Of course after the “b” word incident last week I’m not so sure if he’s on the top of my list of faves this season. He didn’t use a derogatory term to refer to Len or Bruno, only Carrie Ann. Like her or hate her, she did not deserved to be called a b*tch. She was just saying what she thought about his performance. And if I remember the other judges were not kind to him either. Just my opinion on the matter. That being said, I think the judges were generous tonight night in giving him a score of 19 out of 30.
Marlee and Fabian. Let me begin by saying how amazing I think Marlee is, mainly because of the risk she is taking by being on the show. How can you expect someone to be able to dance when they can’t hear the music, and then dance as well as Marlee has done so far? It’s mind boggling. She did a great Quickstep tonight, and the judges liked it too. Len said that she has great potential to go a long way in the competition, and Bruno said she was a contender. She got a score of 24 out of 30.
Kristi and Mark. I thought that Kristi would do well in this competition, but she has completely exceeded my expectations. Had I not saw how rough she was in the behind the scenes footage in learning the Mambo I would never have believed it. When she came out tonight she was right on it, hitting every position, every facial expression, everything. I think it’s the competitor in her coming out. She knows what it takes to win and she’s taking what she learned from figure skating and applying it to her training in dancing, that’s obvious. The judges loved her, giving her a 27 out of 30.
Mario and Karina. They ended the show with a Quickstep. Mario was so good last week in the Cha Cha Cha, and he has some background in hip hop dancing so I was interested to see how he did with a traditional ballroom dance. The judges liked his performance, I just kind of thought it was distracting. I was distracted by the music and their costumes. It doesn’t mean I thought it was bad, just distracting. The judges gave him a score of 26 out of 30.
At the end of the night here’s how everyone ended up, with the highest scoring couple at the top of the list:
Kristi – 27/30
Jason – 27/30
Mario – 26/30
Marlee – 24/30
Shannon – 24/30
Marissa – 21/30
Priscilla – 21/30
Cristian – 20/30
Adam – 19/30
Penn – 17/30
Steve – 16/30
Monica – 15/30

Did you happen to notice Cheryl’s costume, it was just long enough to hide some of her partners missteps. I get an underlying current of meanness with Penn; maybe I’m wrong. Adam is just a twerp.
