High School Confidential: Cate, Beth, and Lauren
This week it was as if the girls were the exact opposite of each other. Lauren was boring – a parent’s dream! She loved school, did nothing to get in trouble, wasn’t interested in dating, and went from wanting to be a teacher to wanting to be in politics. She came from a stable family and about the only blip in her life was having to go to the University of Pennsylvania because she didn’t get into Georgetown.
On the other hand, Cate was a mess. Her mom died when she was in 5th grade. Her mom died in September and by December, dad Rick had remarried. Cate has a twin sister, but the two are not close. Stepmom Tammy’s daughter was Beth, who we’ve already seen on the show before. Beth and Cate originally got along, but with four teen girls in the house, the stress level built to be unbearable. I think it all centered around Cate not being able to grieve and her dad not being there for her. Tammy had rules (gasp) and made the girls do chores and dress modestly. As the stress built, Beth and her sister decided to go stay with their dad. Cate was diagnosed with depression, then Tammy found her diary, where she talked about being anorexic and cutting herself. Tammy went to Rick and he called the police to take her to the hospital. Cate was angry that Tammy was snooping in her stuff.
She got a bit better and started dating Brad. At first, they decided no sex, but Brad pressured her. She finally broke it off with him, then got back together with him and gave in and had sex with him. Then she decided she didn’t love him and broke it off again. She really didn’t start to heal until she wrote a letter to her mother and began grieving her death. She and Beth were at odds with each other and even though they met at the end of the show, you could tell they weren’t going to talk to each other again unless they had to. Tammy and Rick eventually filed for divorce and I think Cate was happy to have her dad all to herself.
