High School Confidential: The Premiere Episode

This show is a new documentary series that airs on the WE channel. It follows 12 girls from their first year in high school until their senior year (2002-2006). It covers the challenges they face. You get to see how they grow and how they change year by year.

I suppose each episode of High School Confidential will deal with two girls, at least that is how the premiere was done. It covered the lives of Lauren and Cappie. Lauren was the more outgoing of the two, but she had a solid family foundation. Cappie had a mom, who loved her, but her father had started another family and during her freshman and sophomore years, she felt like she was not a priority in his life. This is what probably led her to being the “party” girl – drinking too much and hanging out with mostly guys. She also had to work for things in life, taking a job in her first year of high school and purchasing her own car the next. In her junior year, she broke up with her boyfriend (who it seemed only liked to get drunk) and began dating a new guy, Josh. He was one of her best friend’s boyfriends and their dating caused her to lose most of her old friends. As it turns out, that was not a bad thing. She began picking up her grades and quit partying; saying she felt “partied out.” She learned to cope with her absentee father and by her senior year, she was accepted to KU.

Lauren seemed to have everything – she was given a car when she was 16, she was on the drill team, she had a good boyfriend, and she was on the homecoming court, but she also had something else – a brain tumor. The show followed her through her medical procedures and we see this normally confident girl face the possibility of having a cancerous tumor. She gets so stressed she resorts to sometimes sleeping with her parents and they finally see a therapist. She eventually gets surgery because the tumor grew, but the surgery showed it was benign. At this point, the whole family, who had gone through her ordeal with her, felt relieved. This experience caused her to realize that you really have no control over life.
