Injuries and illness plague DWTS this week

I was a bit lukewarm about this week’s show of Dancing with the Stars.  I guess I was just a bit skeptical and not really looking forward to the group hip hop number.  Well, I guess I was looking forward a bit to it because I am dying to see how Cloris performs.  But should an 82 year old woman really be doing hip hop?  That’s debatable.  But I got very excited when I was reminded that Michael Flatley would be a guest judge this week.  I was getting tired of Len and his cranky old man routine.  However the best news of the night was finding out that Michael Flatley would be performing tomorrow night during the results show.

Maurice and Cheryl were up first, doing a Viennese Waltz.  Let me just say that Cheryl looked stunning.  She was wearing this beautiful floor length gown in a soft pinkish – lavenderish – grayish hue that was so flattering to her.  All you haters who say she got fat – take that!  The judges thought that he did have a bit of improvement from week 1 (the last time he did a ballroom dance) but he was still lacking fluidity.  Carrie Ann said that he and Cheryl lack real chemistry.  Michael was nice, saying that overall it was a beautiful dance but at times he was lacking fluidity.  They got a score of 21 out of 30.

Lance and Lacey performed next, doing a Jive.  Last week the judges were harsh on Lacey and it seemed as if she took their words to heart and came back even stronger.  Their Jive was great.  It was traditional yet Lance was able to bring out his personality.  The judges loved it.  Michael said he came out smokin’, while Bruno said he was back on target.  Carrie Ann said that Len would be proud of him and this performance.  The judges gave the performance a 27 out of 30.

Susan and Tony performed next, doing the Mambo.  She was upset after being in the bottom two last week and made the decision that she did not want this to be her last dance.  I thought it was kind of delicate, cautious and lady like, but the judges disagreed with me.  Carrie Ann told her she broke out of her box, while Michael said she was intoxicating.  I thought he was very classy when he mentioned a timing problem that Bruno harped on in the performance – he said that it was there but there was no reason to dwell on it.  They got a score of 23 out of 30.

Brooke and Derek were next, dancing the Rumba.  Brooke had injured her ankle on Monday and it got to the point this week that she needed to take a day off for treatment.  Her doctor/therapist (not sure who it was) said that usually he would suggest a week of rest with a tendon injury such as hers, but she said no because it would mean the end of her and Derek in the competition.  I liked their dance, and Michael Flatley was absolutely in love with it.  He said it took his breath away and he hoped he had a card high enough for the score he wanted to give.  Bruno and Carrie Ann were not as impressed.  Both of them said that her performance was sub par, and Carrie Ann said she could see pain in her body as she performed.  They gave them 8’s while Michael gave them a 10, a total of 28 out of 30.

Cloris and Corky performed next, a Cha Cha.  She’s a great performer, but not such a good dancer.  As always I’ll preface these comments with the fact that I can only hope to be in such good shape and able to move like her when I’m in my 80’s.  That being said, she needs to go.  The fans need to stop voting for her, whether it be a VFTW campaign or just as a novelty. Carrie Ann said it right when she said that the competition lost Toni Braxton for this and that made her sad.  Michael said that his father told him he couldn’t say anything bad about her, but he also said she’s very lucky to have Corky for a partner.  Bruno said that she is the only person able to sell such nonsense and have people buy it.  They ended up with a score of 15 out of 30.

Cody and Julianne were up next, doing the Samba.  Julianne became ill this week and told the fans that she was diagnosed with Endometriosis and would be having surgery tomorrow to remove her appendix.  Edyta will step in to be Cody’s partner should they make it through to next week.  I loved their Samba, and only Carrie Ann agreed with me.  Bruno thought they got it completely wrong, that there was no joy or “bounce” in the routine.  Michael is proving himself a gentleman – he said that he wasn’t convinced that this was Cody’s best performance but that he had everything it takes to be successful and his best is yet to come.  They got a score of 23 out of 30.

Warren and Kym had the final individual dance before the group hip hop number, doing the Rumba.  It was interesting but I didn’t think it was really sexy.  He does move really well for being such a big guy.  Michael said he would have liked to see more dancing but thought it was very interesting.  Bruno said he always gets the character of the dance right but pointed out that Warren made some mistakes tonight.  Carrie Ann compared him to previous champion Emmett Smith.  They got a 25 out of 30.

Then we are left with the group hip hop number, choreographed by Showtyme.  I was interested to see how Cloris danced…well, she didn’t.  Showtyme had some clever choreography when it came to this routine “hiding” her in the back on stage doing some poses.  Susan also looked a bit out of her element.  I thought the guys did the best – Cody, Warren, Maurice for the celebrities and Derek for the pros.  Overall it was entertaining but I question having this style of dance in a ballroom competiton.

Cudos to you for questioning the hip-hop. While the dance was good, it’s not ballroom; that is not unless you move the ballroom to Times Square!
