Iron Chef America: Battle Alaskan King Crab
This week’s Iron Chef America saw Chef Amanda Freitag take on Iron Chef Bobby Flay. The secret ingredient was Alaskan king crab. The judges this week were Maggie Rodriguez from “The Early Show,” Keyshawn Johnson, a former NFL player/ESPN commentator/restaurateur, and Domenica Catelli, a food author. Did you notice this season’s Top Chef contestant Ariane Duarte working on Chef Freitag’s side?
Chef Frietag presented five dishes: king crab salad, king crab chowder (Maggie loved the aroma), king crab and fresh spaghetti (Keyshawn thought the crab was lost in the dish), king crab with green eggs and ham, and king crab-stuffed veal chop (Domenica would have like to have seen the crab implemented into the dish more).
Iron Chef Flay presented five dishes as well: king crab and salmon (Maggie loved the vinaigrette, but it overpowered the other tastes), king crab and fried green tomato salad (wow, that looked good!), king crab cake with pinot noir poached eggs (Keyshawn said he would have stayed away from the hazelnuts), king crab red curry (Maggie loved the kick, but it seemed to be too much for Keyshawn), and king crab gumbo (Domenica loved the strong crab taste).
The winner was Iron Chef Flay, but not by much. Tied in plating and originality, Iron Chef Flay took it by one point on taste.
