Iron Chef America: Battle Pineapple
This week’s “Iron Chef America” was Battle Pineapple between Chef Akhtar Nawab and Iron Chef Michael Symon. The judges were former NFL player/restaurateur Keyshawn Johnson, In Style senior editor Isabel Gonzalez, and comedian Patton Oswalt.
Iron Chef Symon presented five dishes: pineapple and yellowtail sashimi (which Isabel thought was exquisite), seared halloumi with marinated pineapple (I loved that Patton said he wasn’t a big fan of it as he reached over to take part of Isabel’s), pineapple stuffed tuna (Keyshawn thought it was missing part of the pineapple flavor), pineapple braised duck leg, and pineapple dessert assortment (which Keyshawn thought was his best dish).
Chef Nawab also presented five dishes: cured scallops with pineapple chutney (Keyshawn thought the scallops were a bit fishy, but Isabel disagreed), southern Indian oyster stew with pineapple beignets, roasted sweetbreads with sweet and sour braised pineapple (Patton liked the earth tones), squab tartine with pineapple sabayon (Isabel found it difficult to eat and Keyshawn missed the pineapple), and smoked Berkshire pork with pineapple mostarda (Keyshawn and Isabel disagreed over the sweetness of the dish).
Iron Chef Symon won, taking tasting by 27 to 21, plating by 11 to 10, and originality by 12 to 10.
