Jennifer Bertrand wins season 3 of HGTV’s Design Star
Tonight was the season finale for season 3 of Design Star with the announcement of the designer who will get their own show on HGTV – Jennifer Bertrand or Matt Locke. As with all reunion shows all of the contestants were trotted out onto the stage – all of them, that is, except for Mikey V. No explanation was made as to why he wasn’t there. Maybe all the rumors about him starring in a gay pornographic video was the reason. Or maybe he was just busy. Too busy to get some more national exposure about you and your skills as a designer? Hmm………
Clive begins with the six eliminated contestants on the stage asking them what it’s like to be famous or to be noticed. The answers are kind of boring and expected – but I was distracted by the tan on Trish. Just a wee bit too much time in the tanning beds I think.
Matt and Jennifer come onto the stage and I notice two things. First, Matt is in an actual suit and looks really nice. Second, Jennifer got a new haircut.
The next 40 minutes or so of the show is a rehashing of the season. What designers stood out, how Matt snored like a machine, scenes from the green room with the designers cracking under pressure, and so on.
Finally we get up to the good part of the show – finding out who is the winner. Kim Myles (winner of season 2 of Design Star) comes out with two paint cans for the finalists. They hold little cruise ships, and Kim announces that each of them have won a Caribbean cruise for two. The winner of season 3 of Design Star will attend the VIP reception for the inauguration of the cruise ship. Clive tells the finalists that Bank of America is giving each of them a $5,000 gift card as well.
The head of HGTV programming Michael Dingley comes out with an envelope that contains the contract for the winner of season 3. And the winner is…..Jennifer Bertrand. Her show will premier on the network in January 2009.
Let me just say that I was disappointed that Matt didn’t win. I thought he was more talented in terms of design than Jennifer and had a really engaging personality. He’s the designer I voted for several times this past week. But I’m not sorry that Jennifer won. I liked her too, just not as much as Matt. And I’m glad it’s her and not one of the other contestants. Not mentioning any names (and I won’t), but some of them are VERY annoying.
One nice thing did come about on the show. The two families from New Orleans who had their homes made over in the final challenge were there, and Lumber Liquidators gave each of them a $1,000 gift card and Sears gave each of them a $3,000 gift card. That was pretty nice.
I just hope that we’ll see Matt on one of the shows – maybe as one of the carpenters on Designed to Sell when they expand to a new city.
