Jerry is eliminated on Project Runway
Season 5 of Project Runway opened with the challenge that was presented in season 1 of Project Runway – to use items found in a grocery store to create a garment. After meeting each other the day before and having champagne with Tim Gunn and Heidi Klum on the roof the contestants are awaken at 4:00 a.m. by Tim, telling them to meet him in the lobby. He leads the designers on a walk to Gristedes (a grocery store) where he introduces the challenge. He also introduces the guest judge for this week – the winner of this same challenge in season 1, Austin Scarlett.
Many of the designers head right to the tablecloths to use them as the material for their garment. And of many of these designs it’s pretty obvious that they were made of picnic tablecloths. During his walk through Tim makes note of how many people used this item. He tells the designers that the reason they brought them to a grocery store was to use materials that were unexpected and not traditional. He tells the designers that tablecloths are a form of fabric and said that the judges might think they were a bunch of slackers for using them.
Stella has issues big time with her material – garbage bags. She realizes the ones she purchased were pretty flimsy and were ripping as she tried to use them to create a garment. She pretty much wastes all of the day moaning and complaining about her trash bags. When the models get there on the following day she pretty much drapes her model in the garbage bags and uses duct tape to hold it together.
The three designers that the judges really liked were Daniel, Korto and Kelli. Daniel made a dress from plastic drinking cups, using an iron to melt them so he could mold them into a dress. The judges thought he took a chance making this garment, that it was very creative and unexpected that someone would make a dress from plastic cups. Korto made a dress from a tablecloth but the judges thought it was a very chic design. She made a collar of lettuce and tomatoes that got high marks from the judges. Kelli made a dress from vacuum cleaner bags she dyed and coffee filters she burned with a lighter. The judges thought she was resourceful and pushed the envelope while creating a pretty and artistic garment.
The bottom three designers were Jerry, Stella and Blayne. Jerry’s outfit reminded the judges of a costume that would be worn in a slasher movie. I think Heidi described it as a hospital plumber. Stella’s garment was not interesting and the judges were not impressed with her garment. They went as far as to call it butt ugly and horrible. Blayne made a garment (that kind of looked like a leotard or something) that was described by the judges as not boring but like a Playboy Bunny gone grunge. They said it was provocative but not pretty.
The elimination came down to Stella and Jerry. In the end it was Jerry who was sent home. What I personally think it came down to was that Stella at least chose materials that were not expected or a challenge while Jerry took the easy way out using a tablecloth and a shower curtain.
