Jim is eliminated from Shear Genius tonight

As a woman who gets her hair colored on a very regular basis, I was very interested in watching tonight’s shortcut challenge on Shear Genius.  It involved taking their mannequin’s hair from black to a level 8 blonde in two hours.  I’m not a hair stylist so I don’t know how hard that would be, but it sounds hard to me.  And I know how difficult it was to find a stylist that could actually do red that it’s got to be hard to find one that can do this!

Many of the contestants seemed to be having difficulty with the shortcut challenge tonight.  Some of them no longer do color on a regular basis, so they had to go back to basics to complete the challenge.  It was interesting to watch Theodore and Danna and their arrogance in the challenge.  They are colorists so they were not worried in completing the challenge.  Danna had such poor time management she didn’t even have time to comb out her mannequin’s hair, while Theodore had problems with the end result.  For two color experts you’d expect that they would be in the top three, but no.  Tabatha, Ben and Evangelin were the top three in the shortcut challenge, with Tabatha declared the winner.  This week’s guest judge (and judge for the shortcut challenge) was Roy Teeluck from Nexxus.

This week the winner of the shortcut challenge had the opportunity to pick the client first for the long challenge.  The other top two stylists would have an advantage in picking their models.  This week’s elimination challenge was the Nexxus Dream Celebrity Challenge – the clients had pictures of the celebrity hair styles they wanted.  Some of the clients were unrealistic in their expectations, so knowing ahead of time the celebrity the client wanted to emulate was a big advantage.  Not only could they pick clients who would be easier to satisfy, the three top finishers had all night to figure out how they would accomplish it.  The remaining stylists picked the clients without any knowledge of the celebrity they wanted to look like.

The stylists had two hours to complete the celebrity look for their clients and would be judged on their technical ability, style interpretation and client satisfaction.

Some of the contestants seemed to have an easy time working with their clients, convincing them to rely on the stylist’s expertise in creating the look.  Daisy had an awful time with her client – she spent more time talking with her than doing her hair and didn’t have the conviction to tell her client that the look she wanted would be impossible in the time allowed for the challenge.

My favorite stylists this week were: Tabatha, Ben, Danna, Lacey and Dr. Boogie.  I did not like the styles from Daisy, Theodore or Jim.

The judges placed Tabatha, Anthony and Evangelin in the top three and Anthony was declared the winner.  The reward for the winner this week was to be featured in a Nexxus ad in Allure magazine.  The bottom two declared by the judges were Jim and Daisy, and Jim ended up being eliminated.

One thing I did notice this week is that these contestants seem to be a bit more dramatic that the contestants we’ve seen on other Bravo TV shows.  That, or maybe I was just too tired while watching the show tonight and they were rubbing me the wrong way.  Who knows.
