Josie Maran kicked off Dancing With The Stars in week 1
I settled down to suffer through the hour long results show tonight and I’m hoping against hope that ABC will make some changes to make it pass a little more quickly. We’ll see about that I guess.
As always, the show begins with a recap of the previous night’s performances. Yep, that’s nice, but I watched them last night and I’m sure most everyone else tuned in to see who is eliminated has also seen all these routines already. The judges then give us some of their comments about the quality of the performances during this season’s premier, and then announce the encore performance will be performed by Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas. I thought their performance tonight was just as good as the first time, but something was different and I think I can put my finger on it. Tonight we were expecting it to be good. Monday night we had no idea how good Sabrina would be.
Dolly Parton was one of the guest performers tonight, and her first song was “9 to 5” with professionals Cheryl Burke, Julianne Hough, Derek Hough and Mark Ballas dancing along with her. I seem to remember Lisa Rinna and Louis Van Amstel danced a Quickstep to this song a few seasons ago. Tonight the professionals did a combination of styles of dance but I did not think they really included any Quickstep moves at all. I just think it is so interesting that you can do different styles of dances to the same song. Parton’s second performance was unaccompanied by any of the professional dancers. I’ve complained before in this blog about that – I think if you are on the show then you should be accompanied by some of the dancers from the show. Just my opinion for whatever that is worth.
They introduced a new feature on the show for this season “Stars of Dance.” The first performer was Savion Glover, known as the greatest tap dancer in the world. I’ll give you that he is very, very good but the greatest….? And do they mean the greatest right now, or the greatest ever? Personlly I love Gregory Hines and the scene in “White Nights” with Mikhail Baryshnikov when they are tap dancing. It wasn’t as complicated or complex as the scene tonight, but I just wanted to say that I think there are other tap dancers equally as good. I think this type of performance is a better use of time than watching some of the stupid skits we saw last season with Jimmy Kimmel.
“The Origins of Dance” with Kenny Mayne – was this really necessary? That’s all I’ll say on this topic.
The bottom two couples were the ones who got the lowest combined totals from their night of competition. Josie Maran and Alec Mazo from night one and Mark Cuban and Kym Johnson from night 2. It surprised me that Mark Cuban was in the bottom two. I figured he would have ordered the entire Dallas Mavericks organization to vote for him, and I thought he might get some votes from the husbands forced to watch the show. In the end the couple eliminated was Josie and Alec. I don’t think it was a huge surprise, because it wasn’t just the low judges scores. I don’ t think she had the name recognition of some of the other stars. In the end Alec said that whatever votes they got please give to Cameron and Edyta (his wife).
Next week the stars will be performing the Mambo or the Quickstep. That should be interesting.

I think ABC is at a programming loss. They have a gold mine in Dancing With the Stars, and are so afraid to try something new, such as even a Celebrity Style game show, that they will ride this as far and as long as they can.
