Kit is eliminated from Project Runway tonight
At first I wasn’t too crazy about the challenge as announced on Project Runway. The designers were asked to create an avante-garde look inspired by their model’s hairstyle. And some of the hairstyles were pretty crazy – one of my least favorites in the beginning was the faux-hawk sported by Victorya’s model.
The designers return to the workroom to get the details from Tim, who informs them that since the very nature of avante-garde designs is ambitious the remaining eight designers will be divided into teams of two. They are told that the designs do not have to be practical, or even wearable. A team leader would have to be determined and only one model would be used. Tim randomly assigns the designers as follows:
Kit and Ricky – with Kit being team leader since the design they chose to make was her concept.
Sweet P and Rami – with Rami being team leader because Sweet P said she couldn’t think in an avante-garde way.
Christian and Chris – with Christian being the team leader (and I’m not sure why he was selected as such).
Jillian and Victorya – with Victorya being team leader based on a coin toss.
Kit and Ricky and Christian and Chris seem to work really well together. There is some tension with Victorya and Jillian, not because of the designers but because of the type of designers they are. Jillian mentions that both of them are last minute designers, not working really well with time constraints. Also Jillian was kind of scared with the fact that Victorya had immunity, knowing that if her team was the losing team she would be the one to go home this week.
Sweet P and Rami were a whole other story. I liked Rami as a designer – up until tonight. I think he totally did a diva act, having to take total control of the avante-garde look because he did not trust Sweet P. He made some excuses that it was because she asked so many questions, but I think when it came right down to it he thought he was the better designer and would just do everything so when they won he would get all the glory. Plus the fact that he made Sweet P cry isn’t cool.
Tim brings together the designers at the beginning of day 2 for a special announcement. You know when Tim has a special announcement or tells everyone to “gather round” that something is up. He tells the designers that they would have to create a second look for the runway, a ready to wear outfit that captured the essence of their avante-garde look. They would have an additional $50 in budget to create this look. You would think the designers were told they would have to kill a puppy or something because they were all pretty upset over this. And I guess I can’t blame them. Day 1 they are told to do this extravagant, outrageous, elaborate avante-garde design thinking they would have two full days to complete it. Then they are given the bombshell that, in fact, this is not the case. I guess I’d be pretty pissed too.
With six hours to go in day 2 Tim does a “gather round” for both the models and the designers. He tells them he has a special guest, but this time it is a good surprise. Nathanial Hawkins, lead stylist for Tresemme announced that the looks created by the winning team would be featured in an upcoming Tresemme ad in Elle magazine. He also was going to provide some help and consultation with the teams in deciding a hairstyle for the model wearing the ready to wear garment.
Guest judge for the runway show tonight was Alberta Ferretti, and Italian designer. There were two clear favorites tonight – the teams of Christian and Chris and Victorya and Jillian. Personally I did not like the avante-garde dress of Christian and Chris, and I thought their ready to wear outfit was kind of boring. I loved the outfit that Victorya and Jillian created for the avante-garde piece, but I also thought their ready to wear little black dress was boring. Then again would it really be any other way? I mean a lot of creative energy went into the avante-garde designs. Would you have that much left over to create another dress? The judges selected Christian and Chris as the winning team, and as team leader Christian gets immunity from elimination for next week’s challenge.
Rami and Sweet P’s avante-garde piece was kind of boring. When it came down the runway I thought it screamed Rami. It looked like he would have created it (a vibe I did not get from the other designs). The judges said that it was draped, something he does well, but that they need to see more. They did like the ready to wear dress that Sweet P did on her own. She mentioned that she knew they would probably be in the bottom and the only way to save herself was to do a great job on this dress. Plus the judges did not like the fact that Rami threw Sweet P under the bus during the judging. The judges thought that Kit’s avante-garde design was not avante-garde at all. They compared it to a dress that would be worn by Scarlett O’Hara, but instead of having a great looking dress like the one in the movie that was made out of curtains, their dress looked as if she pulled the sheets off her bed and ran out the door. They thought the ready to wear dress was amateurish and just as disappointing as the avante-garde piece.
In the end it was the team leaders on the chopping block, with Kit being eliminated. I guess this week the bigger fashion sin was to be fashion backwards rather than not venturing out of your comfort zone.
I also figured out tonight that Chris March reminds me of Nathan Lane. Just an aside.

I liked Rami’s draping the first week, and the second week, and the third week, and the fourth week - uh, what week are we on now and he is STILL draping? Show us something different for God’s sake Rami!
I am glad Sweet P was saved - her wearable dress was cute. To me (but what do I know?) the only two avant-garde looks were Christian and Chris’ (with more emphasis on Chris!) and Jillian and Victorya.
