Lacey and Theodore eliminated from Shear Genius in Week 3
When I started to watch Shear Genius I wasn’t too sure what to think. The first episode was kind of rough, as if the producers and directors were trying to find their way in the world of Bravo TV reality television. The third episode has solidified in my mind that Shear Genius is a fabulous reality television program and belongs right up there with Top Chef and Project Runway.
For the short cut challenge tonight the contestants were told to recreate Sally Hershberger’s signature haircut –the Sally Shag, or in other words Meg Ryan’s famous shag style haircut. They were going to be judged on technical proficiency, the overall look and how closely it resembled Sally’s cut. Before the contestants went ahead with the challenge Sally gave them a lesson on how to do the cut. After the lesson the contestants were given one hour to complete the cut.
Thirty minutes into the challenge Sally drops a bombshell – the loser of the shortcut challenge this week was going to be eliminated. I just loved this twist. You never saw an elimination on Top Chef from a quickfire challenge, so this was a great spin on a tried and true format. The winner of this challenge was going to get first choice of client in the elimination challenge, and the ability to determine the order in which the other contestants would pick their clients.
Tabatha, Tyson and Ben are the top three performers in the shortcut challenge, with Tyson being the winner. Sally even told him that she would pay $650 to get the cut from him. Lacey, Danna and Evangelin were the bottom three, with Lacey being eliminated. She knowingly did her own take on the Sally Shag and went in knowing that it was a risk. Since the challenge was judged on how closely the cut resembled Sally’s style it probably was a bad risk to take.
The morning of the elimination challenge Rene meets with the contestants and throws them yet another curve ball. The challenge was to take a long hair style to a short cut, but the fly in the ointment was that they had to use “special tools” to do the cut, and the tool they chose was the only one they could use to create the style. Tyson picked the order in which the contestants would pick the cutting instruments, and they had a choice of everything from butcher shears to wire cutters, to craft scissors, to box cutters and hedge clippers. Tyson comes out and says that he picked the people with the weakest cutting skills first and his main competition was saved for last. The order in which he had people pick was: Dr. Boogie, Danna, Evangelin, Theodore, Ben, Daisy, Anthony and finally Tabatha.
Evangelin takes a really big risk by choosing the hedge clippers when there were a ton of other cutting instruments to pick from. She said that she knew she needed to take a risk. To me it was like a scene fro m a horror movie, your hair stylist coming after you with garden tools.
I did like the comments Tabatha made about her client, that she was the typical client you would see in a hair salon. She wanted a change, but didn’t want to change her hair. That’s me! I guess I drive my hair stylist crazy too.
The guest judge tonight was Garren, a hairstylist to the stars with famous clients like Madonna and Scarlett Johansson. He seemed to have a strong point of view and wasn’t afraid to call it like he saw it tonight.
The top three styles were Daisy, Tabatha and Evangelin. Evangelin was named the winner of the challenge. The judges told her they loved the risk she took by picking the hedge clippers and the color she used on her client. The bottom three were Ben, Dr. Boogie and Theodore. The judges gave it to Dr. Boogie for playing it same, telling him that safe is no longer good enough. Ultimately it was Theodore that was eliminated. He was just a bit too overconfident in the challenge, thinking he would have an easy time with curly hair since he considered himself “expert” in cutting and styling it. The judges called him out for being overconfident, and told him he had no direction to the haircut.
