Last Comic Standing: The Miami International Auditions
Sometimes when I was watch LCS, I think the comedians the judges pick are spot on. Then other times, I am disappointed. Guess which I was this week? If you said disappointed, you would be correct. There were a lot of good international comedians showcased tonight, but the two that made me laugh the hardest were not chosen. I loved John Maloney – he did was I’d call more adult humor. It was hilarious – I loved the bit about how Spanish was sexy but German wasn’t and he said “I am hung like a Hoover” in German. Then he said Italian was sexy too and did “Is there a pharmacy near here” and “I’ve got a stiffy” in Italian, saying those were the only two phrases he needed to know. Had me in tears, but he was a no-go for Vegas.
The first comedian to tear me up was Stephen K. Amos. He was great in his audition, but when he talked about being the last born of the Queen of England, I thought I was gonna die. I mean when he said he was in all the Royal family pictures, in the back holding a tray, but “I’m there,” I had to stop the DVR I was laughing so hard. Yeah, Stephen went back to England on the plane with John I assume because they didn’t choose him either.
The comedian they did choose – well, most of them were okay. Shazia Mizra was quick and witty, but I only found her slightly amusing. Papa CJ from India – I wanted to like him, I really did. But he was hit and miss with me. Did he remind anyone else of Emo Phillips? Jim Tavare, who looked oddly like the lead singer from Midnight Oil, was funny, but in that not rolling on the floor kind of way. Paul Foot was odd – sort of a Steven Wrightish kind of comedian. I did love his “baby on board” joke – how he was going to put a sticker on his car that said there are heterosexuals and homosexuals in his car of all ages and while some may have reproduced and some may not have, all of them deserved to not be rear-ended by another car. Lioz from Israel was funny, but weird. He was a prop guy and I am just not sure how far he can go. He has the audience ROLLING with the man making love to a bat joke though. Even his “KKK guy celebrating a birthday” went over well.
Overall, I was just a bit disappointed. I thought Arnaud, the lone French contestant, was funny, but they sent him home. His impersonation of Robert DeNiro in Taxi Drive (“You talking to moi?”) was too, too funny. Kojo from Africa had some good jokes about asking women to dance now and only getting sound effects, but he was sent packing too.
Next week, we get to see the chosen 32 in the semi finals.
