Matt and Ashley A. sent home on Grease: You’re the one that I want tonight
Since it’s been two weeks since the last show I can’t really remember too much about the contestants or their previous performances. I do think that this week of having the contestants sing Broadway musical songs is smart because we’ll get an idea of how the contestants handle the songs that tell stories and are integral to the play, rather than pop music songs that tell a story on their own but maybe don’t require the emotion or acting ability as the Broadway songs do.
Tonight was over for me after the first two performances. Max and Laura were completely awesome and totally blew me away. I think I’ve seen Max before (or maybe not) on the Disney Channel. Weekday mornings they have these mini-shows and music performances in lieu of commercials. I swear that Max looks like one of the guys in the group Imagination Movers. All you other parents out there – am I right or what?! Laura is just amazing. I liked her in the first show and I think she is a strong contender to win the entire competition. My other favorites tonight were Austin and Kathleen. If I have to guess as to who will be in the bottom two next week I’d say Jason and Kevin for the men and Allie and Kate for the ladies.
I also think that having Andrew Lloyd Webber on the show gives it some credibility, or at least I thought so until I found out that he casted his London show of “The Sound of Music” (specifically Maria) with a TV show. Maybe he has an interest in the American version of the show, huh?
How about this sing off nonsense? America votes and the bottom two of the men and the women have to sing to survive (kind of like on Rockstar: SuperNova). Then the panel of experts (Kathleen, Dave and Jim) decides who is saved and who goes home. So let me ask you this – does America truly picks who wins and who loses or do we just say hey, we don’t like these too, you experts decide on who you want it to be. This is really kind of misleading, don’t you think? I thought all along that it would be the top two vote getters who would win the parts. Now the cynic in me is saying we’ll probably pick the top two men and women and the “experts” will decide who gets the leads in the play. The bottom two men were Jason and Matt (which I called last week) and the bottom two ladies were Allie and Ashley A. The judges saved Jason (because they said Broadway was no place for beginners) and Allie (because they said they didn’t know why she was there). I’ll tell you why Allie was there – America didn’t like her performance last show or they didn’t see her as Sandy in the show. And the beginners comment – so just where do you say Matt gets his experience so he can get on Broadway? Don’t you think it would make for even better press to have this unknown get the lead? But that wouldn’t have happened, not with Max and Austin out there!
