Matt and Jennifer compete in the final challenge on HGTV’s Design Star

This week was the final challenge for Matt and Jennifer on Design Star before America can vote to decide the winner.  I think that for the most part people have their minds made up already and this challenge is just for show, but that’s my opinion.  There’s nothing that I saw tonight in terms of design that made me change my mind.  There is something I saw that confirmed that I am sure of who I will vote for to be HGTV’s next Design Star.

The challenge was to make over the living room, dining room, and kitchen for two families in New Orleans who were impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  The first family was the family of a constable (the Oleaga family).  Matt would be the designer working on their house.  The other family was that of a fire captain (the Gowland family) and Jennifer would be their designer.  They would have 36 hours over four days to complete the makeover.  Their budget: $20,000 each.  Sears was donating the appliances and Lumber Liquidators the hardwood flooring.  On day 1 the designers would have the assistance of one carpenter; on days 2 and 3 they would have a team of three carpenters working for them.

The beginning of day 2 Clive tells the finalists that they would get some extra help.  Out of a car pops eliminated contestants Mikey V. and Trish.  There are paint cans in front of Jennifer and Matt.  The one with the can containing New Orleans knick knacks would have first choice of help.  They would switch on day 3.  Matt wins first pick and says that since Jennifer needed extra help since she had never done a kitchen before he would give her Mikey V. and pick Trish.  This is what I mentioned above that made me sure that I will vote for Matt.  He is truly a gentleman and seems to be an all around good guy.

Day 4 was four hours of work by themselves for Matt and Jennifer.  With only a few crises for each of them they are actually able to finish the projects completely.  Even though the judges have no say in evaluating the work they do show up to watch the hosting part of the challenge and give their opinion on the design.  As for the hosting I think Matt has made so much improvement.  He is cute, funny and has so much energy.  Jennifer has always been good.  The judges liked both of their rooms and their hosting ability.  The families loved the makeovers.

Next week we will find out who will be HGTV’s Next Design Star, getting their own show on the network.  While I like both of the finalists I am really hoping that Matt wins.
