Matthew is eliminated on Shear Genius

I don’t know when I’ve seen hair as long as that sported by the models in the shortcut challenge on tonight’s episode of Shear Genius.  The remaining ten stylists were given the challenge to create a style that was complicated and structurally interesting without cutting any hair on their client’s head.  Jaclyn Smith meets the stylists in the salon along with guest judge Campbell McAuley and asks them to select scissor boxes.  The number in the box corresponded with the length of the client’s hair.  And as I mentioned before, they had some really long hair (I think the shortest number was like 28 or 29 inches).  The winner of the shortcut challenge would get first choice of client in the elimination challenge along with the right to determine the selection order of client for the remaining stylists.

The bottom two stylists in the shortcut challenge were Nekisa and Nicole, with Nekisa being named the worst.  The top two stylists were Matthew and Charlie, with Matthew winning the challenge.

That night back at the house the stylists were looking to kiss some serious Matthew butt, but he went right to bed.  Meredith goes to get him to say everyone wanted to toast him so he does come up and some of the stylists (like Dee and Daniel) make an effort to go and speak with Matthew.  In a confessional type interview Nicole said that up to that night no one really cared if Matthew was there to drink with them or not.

The next day Rene gives them their elimination challenge – create a red carpet hair style.  He introduces them to their “clients” – a rack of beautiful evening gowns.  The stylists would select a gown and then that would be their client.  Here’s the order Matthew gives for selecting clients (after him first, of course):  Paulo, Gail, Meredith, Dee, Daniel, Charlie, Nekisa, Nicole and Glenn.

The hair show this week was an actual red carpet, set up outside.  There were two guest judges with Ken Vo and Jaclyn – celebrity hair stylist Mark Townsend and Days of Our Lives actress (and host of Biggest Loser) Alison Sweeney.  Everyone goes inside for the judging.

Four stylists are safe based on their scores: Meredith, Dee, Nekisa and Daniel.  The judges thought Glenn, Charlie and Gail had the top styles.  Charlie had the winning style, and this is his second win in a row.  Again he gets immunity from elimination next week.  And from the previews for next week’s show we see Charlie’s comment that if there was ever a challenge to have immunity for this would be it.  The bottom three were Nicole, Matthew and Paulo.  The judges thought that Nicole’s hairstyle looked like an “Asian Bridezilla” in the words of Ken Vo.  Matthew’s hair looked like “My Little Pony” and they said he committed the cardinal sin of not listening to his client when she said her hair would not hold a curl.  Paulo’s hairstyle was more runway than red carpet.

In the end the judges sent home Matthew.  I guess that Nicole’s previous strong performances helped her be safe, and Ken Vo really liked Paulo’s style even though it was not appropriate for the red carpet.
