Paul-Jean eliminated on the first ever episode of Shear Genius
Bravo TV premiered its newest reality TV show, Shear Genius, last night. It’s premise is pretty much the same as Bravo’s other programs Project Runway, Top Chef and Top Design – it’s a competition show to find out who is America’s top hair stylist. The winner of Shear Genius will win $100,000 provided by Nexxus Salon Hair Care Products; an apprenticeship with Nexxus lead stylist Roy Teeluck; and the opportunity to style hair for an Allure magazine photo shoot. The format is also the same as Top Chef, with a shortcut challenge (similar to the quickfire challenge) and a longer elimination challenge.
The shortcut challenge had the contestants working on mannequins to create their signature hair style. I’m not sure what some of the stylists had in mind when creating the hair cuts, because there were only a few styles that I would actually wear. Winning the shortcut challenge was important, because it gave the stylist the opportunity to pick first from the pool of hair models. The stylists would be ranked from 1 to 12 by judge Sally Hershberger (stylist for Hollywood stars, including Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt). Tyson won the shortcut challenge and would be first to pick a hair model. Daisy and Paul-Jean also did well in the shortcut challenge. Personally I liked the styles created by Daisy, Paul-Jean, and Dr. Boogie.
The elimination challenge had the stylists creating a work of hair art with props purchased at Michael’s craft store. They had ten minutes and $75 to get what they needed to create their works of art. I guess I just don’t get the whole hair art thing, because all of the styles created looked just too way out there for the average woman to wear. Theodore won the challenge with his treasure chest style. Daisy and Tabatha were also in the top 3. The bottom three in the elimination challenge were Tyson, Paul-Jean and Lacey, with Paul-Jean being eliminated. I actually liked Lacey’s style; I also liked the hair art created by Dr. Boogie and Daisy. I guess you could say as of right now Dr. Boogie and Daisy are my favorites among the stylists, but that could change.

Really - this is a show?
Sally Herschberger looks like an escaped mental patient with that squirrel bitten toe-nail clippered ‘do.I’ve seen better looks savaged upon the fat girl’s hair at a slumber party by her erstwhile friends after she fell asleep and got her hand put into the warm water to make her wet herself. Flobees cut better styles!
You guys have REALLY reached new depths beyond the bottom of the barrel. I can only imagine what Santino Rice is saying as he shreiks at the TV screen whle you squeeze another fading echo out of the Project Runway formula.
Top Chef - Top Design, and now Hair Don’ts?
God - an entire series that needs the black bar across the eyes of the poor creatures you’ve recruited to sell their immortal souls in the name of 15 minutes on BLAH-vo.
Please - PLEASE - no more!
And during the off-season, Please Get Poor Todd Oldman some BRACES!

I was this close to buying a season pass halfway through the first episode…then they kicked off the only stylist I like—Paul-Jean. What great attitude!!! It made for great tv!
