Reality News: ‘Top Chef’ Contestant Josie Smith-Malave Attacked
“Top Chef” is a demanding show and it has to be difficult to hear Padma ask you to “please pack your knives and go.” But it must not be nearly as tough as being attacked on the street by an angry mob. Josie Smith-Malave, a contestant on the second season of “Top Chef,” was physically attacked outside a New York bar over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
Josie and three friends, including her sister, were asked to leave the Partners bar on September 1st. Once they exited, between ten and twelve other people followed them and began screaming anti-gay slurs. The angry crowd also spit on the women and began beating them.
Nassau County police have charged Matthew W. Walli, 20, with second-degree robbery as a hate crime for stealing a video camera during the tussle.
Josie is openly gay. She is a former sous-chef for the Marlow and Sons restaurant in Brooklyn. She is also a player on the New York Sharks team in the Independent Women’s Football League.
