Season 3 premier of I Wanna Be A Soap Star
SoapNet’s third season of the reality show I Wanna Be A Soap Star debuted last week with the obligatory audition/casting episode. I guess for most competition shows the auditions are built into each run of the show. Personally I don’t really care to see who did not make the show so I was very pleased to find out that only about 30 minutes of the show was dedicated to the audition process. The rest of the time was well spent introducing the audience to this season’s competitors, who are:
Ashlee
Bo
Corey
Jimena
Joyce
Justin
Monica
Patricia
Travis
Yves
For those of you who are counting, that’s five guys and five girls – a ratio that worked very well for the first acting challenge (more on that later).
The winner of season 3 of the show will win a 13 week contract role on the daytime drama Days of Our Lives. Since this is the prize, it is very logical to have two of the judges for this season be from that show. Hogan Sheffer, the head writer (and Emmy award winner) of Days of Our Lives is a judge, as is Mary Beth Evans, the actress who plays Kayla Brady Johnson on the show. As a side note, I just love her hair. The third judge is Michael Bruno, a talent manager, and the show is hosted again by Cameron Mathison.
The top forty actors and actresses from the casting calls in New York City, Los Angeles and Miami were called back to perform for the judges. From this group the final ten were selected.
After we got to know a bit about the contestants we were introduced to their home for the duration of their time in the competition – Stage 25 at Sony Studios. The set up is very dorm like or (as one of the contestants remarked) summer camp like. There is only one bedroom with rows of bunk beds, and only one bathroom. Some of the contestants aren’t all that thrilled about the set up, but others realized that it didn’t matter where they lived or how many bathrooms they had access to, as long as they got what they were looking for – the role on Days of Our Lives.
The ten finalists are marched in a line to meet the three judges. They are then instructed to turn to the person next to them and give them the hottest kiss they can. How lucky was it for the contestants that they were all lined up boy – girl – boy – girl? I’m not sure that SoapNet would be able to air a show that was not set up this way – that would be for premium cable channels, huh? As the contestants are kissing, the first episode ends. Funny how the reality show even has the daytime drama hook – fade out as two hot looking people are making out, telling us to tune in next time to find out what happens.
