Second episode of Skating’s Next Star
If I could use one word to describe the second episode of Skating’s Next Star it would be boring. Kristi Yamaguchi tries to give a pep talk to the contestants at the beginning of the show. I’m still waiting for the pep. Kristi’s a great skater, but I’m not so sure she has the charisma or style of a Tom Bergeron, Ryan Seacrest, or even Jeff Probst. Being the host of the show has some entertainment responsibilities. Kristi just doesn’t have it.
Second, the judges are boring. No, I take that back – I think Rudy is just acting like a jerk. Okay, jackass. He’s hitting on the male skaters and criticizing the skaters for the littlest things. He criticizes Scott for being overly dramatic. Hello, Rudy! Have you ever watched a DVD of your amateur or professional performances? If you open up a dictionary you’ll see a picture of yourself next to dramatic. And Oksana – I guess she’s trying to be a little nicer but it just isn’t working for me. Perhaps she’s trying to be the Paula Abdul of this show – you know the really warm and fuzzy type of judge. Not. Once again Elvis has shown himself to be a gentleman while giving constructive criticism and advice to the competitors.
The elimination challenge this week was a spinning one. The contestants were given music and one minute to perform a routine with three spins and connecting choreography. They were performing these routines on the ice at Cypress Gardens – in fact the ice was the size of a stage and as one of the contestants said was like skating on a postage stamp. When all was said and done Scott and Natalie were eliminated.
One kind of good part of the show was when the skaters competed against one another to earn the title of World’s Fastest Spinner and be listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. Natalia was truly the “spin queen” as she blew away the competition.

I wish I had a way in which I could directly address two of the three judges on the panel of this show. The female in the center and the other judge on the right (if you are watching your tv). I saw a young man trying to skate and fall more than once. Can you imagine, how hard it was for him to keep going as they snickered. Despite the fact that they can instruct others on “how to skate”, they can surely take a lesson on how to treat others. The saddest thing about all this is that after the young man recieved their tasteless criticism, he mentioned one thing that neither of the two adolescent behaving judges realized; He said “I looked up to them”. I bet now he looks at them in an entire new light, as do I, and anyone else that saw their behavior. Shame on them.

Something I have noticed on most of the reality tv shows is that they are all trying to create tension and controversy. This is what seems to sell the shows.
