Series Premier of Top Chef

The first episode ever of Top Chef was very interesting. I think everyone at some point in their lives has worked in a kitchen environment, whether it is a small diner or a chain restaurant. Never have I experienced what the twelve contestants went through in the Quickfire Challenge. They had to work the line in a very famous San Francisco restaurant Fleur de Lys. The chef/owner of the restaurant Hubert Keller would evaluate their performance, ask them to leave the line if they really stunk, and choose a winner. The winner of the Quickfire Challenge gets immunity from elimination, so everyone was nervous. Only three people were able to last the entire 30 minutes – Tiffani, Lee Anne and Dave. Chef Keller said that Lee Anne was clearly the winner.

The Elimination Challenge was next. The contestants had $30 dollars and three hours to prepare their signature dish. They were cooking for each other – the other contestants were able to critique the creations. Harold, Steven and Tiffani were the top three in this challenge, with Harold winning. The bottom three were Ken, Andrea and Candice, and Ken was the one who was sent packing.

The first episode was great but hard to follow in terms of getting to know the contestants. We were only given brief glimpses of everyone so it’s kind of difficult to determine who are likeable and who are not. Obviously Ken was very unlikable, and I don’t think any of the other contestants were sorry to see him go.
