Shear Genius: Paulo is eliminated

With only five stylists left on Shear Genius, the competition is starting to heat up.  Personalities are really coming out and you can just tell that everyone who is left wants to win it.  And of the five stylists left in the competition at this point I think the final three are going to be…well, maybe I’ll save my predictions for later.

The show starts, as always, with the shortcut challenge.  Today’s guest judge for this round was Dean Banowetz, the stylists for the American Idol contestants and for AI host Ryan Seacrest.  Jaclyn tells the stylists that today they won’t be picking their clients, that instead the clients will pick them.  And on that note five little girls, all ready to start first grade, burst out and hug the stylists who will be doing their hair.

I think that this challenge was difficult for a few of the stylists just because they weren’t used to doing a child’s haircut.  Nicole mentioned that the only other children she’s done haircuts for were her nephews and didn’t think a buzz cut would work today.  Daniel’s little girl wants her hair to look exactly like Jaclyn’s hairstyle.

The top two stylists were Charlie and Daniel, and Daniel wins the challenge.  I completely disagreed with it.  I thought the look Daniel gave his client was a bit too old for her age while Charlie’s pony tail style works well in the real world for a first grader.  The bottom two in this challenge were Paulo and Dee.  I can’t remember if they named a loser for this challenge or not.  Paulo’s style was just kind of messy and you knew the curl wouldn’t hold in this child’s hair.  Dee cut straight bangs on her client but they weren’t straight.  She had run out of time and realized her mistake when it was too late to do anything about it.

That night we really got to see some of the personality of the remaining stylists.  They did a show of the fallen stylists, where Dee pretended to be Oshun, Paulo pretended to be Matt, Nicole pretended to be Meredith and Charlie pretended to be Nekisa.  The “invisible person” pretended to be Gayle (according to the “host” of this show Daniel).

The elimination challenge brought about a nice surprise for the stylists.  Rene meets them in the salon and says they will be working on clients who have seen them at their worst.  The challenge was to update the client’s current style to one they would be proud of.  The clients turn out to be the family members of the five remaining contestants.  Daniel, as winner of the shortcut challenge, has first pick of client and will assign the other clients to the stylists.  The catch is that you can’t work on your own family member.  Here’s how he assigned everyone:

Daniel – Nicole’s mom
Charlie – Daniel’s mom
Dee – Paulo’s cousin
Nicole – Dee’s mom
Paulo – Charlie’s sister

There was really no clear winner in the eyes of the judges (in terms of no one hit the mark perfectly, that there were small problems with all the styles).  Guest judge for the elimination challenge was David Babaii, a celebrity stylist with clients including Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie.  The judges did call out Daniel, Charlie and Dee as the top two styles.  They thought that Dee gave Paulo’s cousin a great transformation even though the color was a bit too punk.  Charlie did a good job with the color on Daniel’s mom but the judges weren’t thrilled with his styling choices.  Daniel gave Nicole’s mom some more style and sophistication but the client would have liked her hair a bit blonder.  In the end the winner of the challenge was Charlie.

The bottom two stylists were Nicole and Paulo.  The judges thought that Nicole gave Dee’s mom a very daring cut that was technically superb but a mistake to give a client unless she specifically asks for it because there are no styling options with it at all.  Paulo didn’t give Charlie’s sister a haircut that would work well with her hair texture, and the judges said they’ve seen this cut many times before.  In the end it was Paulo who was sent home.

I think the final is going to come down to the stylists who were in the top three tonight – Daniel, Dee and Charlie.  If Charlie stays in himself I think he has a chance to win.  He can’t get too overconfident or worry about the other stylists.  Dee is also a strong contender.  I think Daniel will make the final three but isn’t as strong as the other two.  But who knows what will happen next week.
