So You Think You Can Dance – Top Twenty’s First Performances

The top twenty were paired up tonight – for better or worse.  Dan Karaty was the third judge tonight along with Nigel and Mary and he let his opinions be known.

Jaimie and Hok were given hip hop.  Dan appreciated the effort, but Nigel dissed choreographer Shane Sparks when he said that he found Hok’s own stuff more exciting than what Shane had choreographed for him.  Anya and Danny had to perform the jive.  As Dan said, they made it look effortless.  Mary’s “hot tamale train” comment was a hoot – she is just crazy sometimes!  Lacey and Kameron danced a routine choreographed by Mia.  Lacey said she hoped to get half of Mia’s vision, but Nigel felt she captured it all.  Sabra and Dominic received mixed comments on their disco routine.  Dan felt they were just okay, but Nigel pointed out that this was the first time Dominic had danced with a partner and thought they did well considering that.  Ashlee and Ricky performed the Argentine Tango.  I had to agree with Dan, it didn’t seem very sexy.  And I also thought the same thing Nigel did – Ashlee was so much taller than Ricky, you almost wondered who was leading who.

Sara and Chuy (Jesus) chose pop jazz.  It was a fun routine, with all the judges enjoying it.  Jessi and Pasha’s smooth waltz was just that – very smooth.  It was a beautiful dance – just classic.  Faina and Cedric had to do a hip hop routine.  Poor Faina had trouble with this one, but Nigel didn’t feel that it would cause them to be eliminated this week.  Lauren and Neil danced the salsa, but there was no heat there.  The judges felt Lauren was hot, but Neil performed like a gymnast or cheerleader.  Finally, Shauna and Jimmy ended the night strong with a Broadway routine.  Both Dan and Mary thought it was fun to watch and Nigel felt like it was a good partnership.

It’s hard to say who is in danger of going home this week.  Jaimie and Hok’s performance didn’t just knock the socks off the judges, but I think Hok is enough of a crowd favorite to avoid elimination.  Faina may follow in her brother Stanislav’s footsteps by being the first eliminated – not sure.  Maybe Ashlee and Ricky or Lauren and Neil will be in on the bottom with their “hotless” dances.  Who knows?
