So You Think You Can Dance: Boston Auditions

Nigel was in rare form on this week’s “So You Think You Can Dance.” He quoted Lil’ C (“that was buck”), screamed like Mary for one dancer, said Mary felt comfortable because her ancestors were from Salem, told a krumper who could tap dance that mixing them would be called “krap,” and donned a gas mask when guest judge Tyce moved a bit too much and farted.

There were some unique dancers this week. I wasn’t sure if they were going to tell Teddy Tedholm to go home or not, but they absolutely loved him. Nigel said with all his subtleties, he could do well this season. Nigel also screamed like a little girl when Jean Lloret did his slow motion, rotating handstand. All three judges stood up to wave Vegas tickets at him. Kimara Wood made it to Vegas, but Channing Cooke, Ryan Casey (all 6’ 8” of him), and Russell Ferguson (with his krumping) were sent to choreography. Ryan, God love him, had a lot of body to deal with and although the judges said his feet were great (he was a tapper), they sent him home. Russell, who was also trained in tap dancing, ballet, and African dance, impressed them enough to get a ticket as did Channing.

Day 2 saw the judges send Fabrizio “Breeze” Jenkins to choreography, but a nasty spill he took during his audition made him drop out. Karen (who Mary called one hot tamale girl) and Matthew Hauer were the first married couple to make it through to Vegas. Gene Bersten had some crazy “choreographed” eyebrows (according to Mary), but made it through choreography once he tamed them.

Paul Magliato, too old at 46 for the competition anyhow, didn’t make it to Vegas, but the look on Tyce’s face when he danced was just priceless. Nigel said it looked like he was ice skating at one point and Mary started laughing as soon as he came out – never a good thing. Tyce was dubbed “Dr. Evil” for his harsh comments to dancers. He told one dancer it was like “watching paint dry” while another heard their dancing “looked like constipation.”

Last up was Kevin “K ‘Bez” Hunte, who had been on the show before. He said he had been training in contemporary, but when he didn’t display any in his audition, Tyce called him out for it. However, he must have shown them something in choreography because he got a ticket.
