So You Think You Can Dance: Phoenix Auditions

Mia Michaels served as the guest judge this week on “So You Think You Can Dance” as the show went to Phoenix for auditions. First up was the team of Demitrio “Biggie” Bargas and Brandon “Shorty” Smallwood. These two were such fun and had the judges cracking up, so both were put through to choreography. That proved to be too much for Biggie as he quit and Brandon was later told he would be going home.

Sasha Mallory, who had gotten through to Vegas in Season 4, finds herself going to Vegas again as does Katie Muth and Ellie Soto. Allison Becker caught spinal meningitis when she was 16 months old. It caused her to be deaf, but she said she danced to the vibrations of the music. Nigel thought she had beautiful lines and she brought Mary to tears. Mary told her of her deaf cousin who gave up and wasn’t with us anymore. I couldn’t tell if the “gave up” meant she quit dancing and later died or killed herself, but you could tell Allison dancing touched Mary.

There were same sex partners Willem de Vries and Jacob Jason, who made it though to Vegas after the choreography round. Jonathan Noronha and his batons entertained the judges, but they passed on giving him the ticket to Vegas.

Jarvis Johnson was definitely excited to be there – a bit too excited maybe. His dancing wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected and I was rolling when he literally danced out of his shoes. Nigel called him a dancing fool and they put him through to choreography. But, he had an asthma attack there and after he was okay, ended up leaving.

Some of the dancers were so odd; they had Nigel questioning how close they were to Roswell. When he asked Kelsey White if she had ever been abducted by aliens, she said “Once.” I don’t know if she was kidding or not, but it was enough to send Nigel out of the studio. He did scream from a distance that she should go through to choreography, but they later told her to keep working hard and come back next year.

Jonathan “Legacy” Perez had such a reputation as a b-boy that Mia had heard about him. Nigel called his dancing tremendous and Mary called him one of the most exciting b-boys she had ever seen. They gave him a ticket to Vegas.
