So You Think You Can Dance: The Top 20 Perform

Tonight on So You Think You Can Dance was our first chance to see the couples dance together, with Dan Karaty serving as a guest judge. First up was Rayven and Jamie with a hip hop routine. Nigel wondered if it would be memorable at the end of the night, Mary liked it, but Dan said it wasn’t quite there. Susie and Marquis did the smooth waltz. Nigel said it was a difficult choreography, but they did well and Mary said it had beautiful lines. Kourtni and Matt danced jazz. What a tall couple they were! Nigel said it was fun, but he needed more personality from Matt and Dan said they didn’t attack it, but rather played it safe.

Chelsea and Thayne did the cha cha and all the judges thought it was sexy and hot. Chelsie and Mark did a contemporary number by Mia that I loved. Mia was worried about Mark, but he did well and all the judges agreed. Twitch and Kherington did a Broadway number. As Dan said, Twitch is not a traditional Broadway dancer, but he didn’t like tradition anyhow and broadway could use some shaking up. Comfort and Chris danced the jive. She is a tiny little thing with her bra an beads on! Nigel said they were smoldering, but Dan said they needed to develop a chemistry together.

Katee and Joshua did a hip hop routine that was my second favorite of the night. I loved that thing at the end where she ended up wearing his jacket! Nigel said it was really, really good and Dan agreed, saying that dancing in unison in hip hop was not an easy thing, but they pulled it off. Jessica and Will danced the tango. Nigel said he loved Debbie Allen, but it Will was going to keep dancing like that, he was glad Debbie couldn’t be on the show this year. Debbie was Will’s mentor and it would not be fair to have her judge with him in the top 20. Courtney and Gev finished out the night with disco. I love disco, but for some reason, it never seems to go over well on this show and tonight was no exception. Nigel said he didn’t love it, but Mary and Dan both thought they did a pretty good job.

It is hard to say who is in danger – at this point, it is still almost a popularity contest. I think Courtney and Gev and Ravyn and Jamie might be in trouble, but you can never tell this early on.
