So You Think You Can Dance: The Top 7 Couples Perform
This week, each couple performed two dances on So You Think You Can Dance rather than one. Frankly, I could have done with a one hour show and one dance, but this gives the dancers a chance to redeem themselves (if needed). The guest judges were Tabitha and Napoleon.
The first couple was Will and Jessica with their first dance, the Jive. These two have really stepped it up lately. Tabitha said she could see the fight in them. Although Nigel had some bad comments for Jessica, I loved this dance. Their second dance was a lyrical jazz piece. I really don’t like the song “Alone” by Heart, but loved the performance. So did everyone else – Mary even put them on the Hot Tamale Train! They were my favorite couple of the night.
The second couple was Comfort and Thayne with their first dance, Broadway. I really was worried about this coupling, but shouldn’t have been, based on tonight’s performance. These two have chemistry and Comfort really shined this week. Nigel got booed because he said he didn’t see passion between the two. Their second dance was the smooth waltz. Mary, a waltz expert, loved it as did Napoleon (who admitted he didn’t know the waltz that well). Nigel called the lifts “tremendous.”
The third couple was Kourtni and Matt with their first dance, hip-hop. Napoleon liked it, but said it wasn’t good enough for a hip-hop competition. Mary said she didn’t feel it and Nigel said there was nothing to get a hold of. Their second dance was the mambo. Mary said she didn’t feel a chemistry between the two while Nigel said Matt needed to be more macho. He got a lot of boos tonight from the crowd and finally told them he was just trying to help the dancers improve.
The fourth couple was Chelsie and Mark with their first dance, jazz. Nigel felt they were the first couple with a real connection and Tabitha and Napoleon agreed that they had chemistry together. Their second dance was the foxtrot. Napoleon said they looked like they loved to dance and Mary said they pulled off some hard moves in the routine. Nigel, ever the critic, said Mark looked uncomfortable.
The fifth couple was Twitch and Kherington with their first dance, the paso doble. I loved this dance, thought the cape thing at the beginning was very dramatic, and set the tone, but Nigel didn’t seem to care for it. The only problem was some judges felt Kherington was more in charge than Twitch. Their second dance was contemporary. Twitch showed off his ads by not wearing a shirt. Mary thought it was powerful and dynamic and believed the story being told. Nigel said they were one of his top three couples.
The sixth couple was Joshua and Katee with their first dance, contemporary. I just love Joshua – he looks like such a hip-hop thug guy, but can be so graceful too. I liked this Mia Michaels’ number and Tabitha did too, saying it was “ridiculous.” Nigel thinks this coupling is one of the three or four that will prove this season is history making. Their second dance was the west coast swing. Mary loved the routine and complimented Benji for his choreography. Nigel admitted it wasn’t either dancers style, but they did adapt well.
The seventh couple was Courtney and Gev with their first dance, hip-hop. This routine was pretty tough and most judges agreed that Gev didn’t keep up with Courtney, but that she did well. Their second dance was Broadway. Napoleon felt that Gev finally found his niche and Nigel said this style was perfect for this couple.
Tough week to say who is going home, but I would have to put Kourtni and Matt in the bottom again.
