So You Think You Can Dance: Top 10 Dancers Compete
This is it – the top 10 “So You Think You Can Dance” dancers. The guest judge tonight was the great Debbie Allen. Partnerships are now formed through the draw of a name and everyone has to dance a solo. Plus, we got a very international touch as the five girls performed a Bollywood routine and the five guys performed an African dance routine. I love that both Mary and Nigel called out poor Evan, who was obviously out of his element, but still did relatively well.
Kayla, the tallest female, was paired with Evan, the shortest guy, for a Viennese waltz. Fortunately for the pair, they put Kayla in flats and pumped Evan up with heels so it wasn’t too bad. Nigel questioned whether it was really a Viennese waltz while Mary criticized Evan for having no movement or power in his turns and no glide in his feet. Debbie was proud of him for throwing his woman around.
Jeanette and new partner Ade were also a mismatched couple as Jeanette is the shortest and Ade is the tallest. It’s almost as if someone purposefully did this to both these couple’s to test them. Ade, with a pick in his hair during the routine, inspired Nigel to stick two pens in his hair. The judges were a bit goofy tonight. Nigel said something about trying to talk Mary out of her clothes later on tonight and Mary pleaded with Debbie to help her. Everyone agreed Ade had funk and Debbie said they wore her out.
Jeanine was paired with Jason to do a contemporary routine by Season 2 competitor Travis Wall. It was a great number and everyone, including Travis was highly praised. I’d say it was probably my favorite of the night.
Randi and Kupono danced the paso doble and the judges had nothing but bad news for them. Nigel felt that their dancing was not as good as the choreography (you could have heard a pin drop when he said that). Mary agreed with Nigel that Randi’s dark wig didn’t work and the couple had no chemistry. Debbie was only slightly easier on them, saying they didn’t have much time to work together to gain trust in each other.
The final couple, Melissa and Brandon, did a Broadway number based on the show “Hair.” All the judges seemed to love that it took them back in time and Mary called it “unbelievable.”
