So You Think You Can Dance: Top 20 Couple Up

It was the Top 20 performing in couples on “So You Think You Can Dance.” First up were Phillip and Jeanine with a hip hop number. Guest judge Adam called it “unfreakin’ real.” He said Jeanine held her own again Phillip, whose specialty is hip hop. Mary and Nigel agreed. Next up was Asuka and Vitolio with a Broadway routine. Adam said they are both good dancers, but it felt artificial compared to the first emotional number. Mary was disappointed by the lack of energy in the routine by both dancers. Nigel said the dance was beautiful, but they needed to put their personalities in it.

The third couple of the night was Karla and Jonathan, who remind me of David Archuletta. Their routine was a cha cha. That one excited Adam and had Mary hollering. Randi and Evan (Ryan was in the audience) did a jazz piece. Adam called them a slightly vertically challenged couple, but they danced like they were eight feet tall. They got another holler from Mary, who called it smoldering dance. Nigel said they were absolutely fantastic and the couple people will talk about.

Next were Paris and Tony with hip hop. How did Tony and Phillip both pull hip hop? Did Cat really say “What the hell?” to Tony? Adam thought it was good, but he didn’t like the costumes and they need more rebound. Mary didn’t find the routine memorable and Nigel agreed with her. Caitlin and Jason got a Bollywood number. Adam said they rocked. He was getting a bit Mary tonight with this excitement. Nigel loved the costumes and said they brought it tonight.

Janette and Brandon go the foxtrot. Adam said that after the excitement of the Bollywood number, he was worried for them, but their foxtrot was lovely. Mary cracked everyone up when she said she couldn’t give Cat an eyebrow because of Botox. Mary and Adam both were just crazy tonight! While Mary called Brandon a powerhouse, Nigel said he needed to work on his footwork. Ashley and Kupuno did weird, but cool jazz number as crash test dummies. Mary said she couldn’t keep her eyes off Ashley and Adam said they would both go far in the competition. Nigel loved the world the choreography drew him into and loved that their dancing kept him there.

Melissa and Ade got a Mandy Moore contemporary routine that Adam said was so very special. Mary hollered and Nigel brought up how fantastic the Top 20 was this year. That’s true, there really weren’t any bad routines.

The night ended on a hot note with Kayla and Max’a samba. Adam said Kayla made him believe in God because only God could have created her. Mary put them both on the hot tamale train.
