So You Think You Can Dance: Top 6 Couples Perform

The guest judge this week on “So You Think You Can Dance” was Tyce Diorio. This was an important week for the dancers – the final 10 get to go on tour, so whoever is ousted this week misses out on the tour money. It is also the last week for the couples we have grown used to – next week, the couples are picked out of a hat.

Each couple got two dances. Melissa and Ade got disco and the waltz. I love Evan and Randi, but these two are quickly becoming my second favorite couple even though Melissa got off balance and fell at the end of the disco routine. Nigel called it an incredible start to the evening and Mary loved the lifts. Their waltz didn’t quite blow away the judges the way their disco routine did, but I think this couple is safe. It was hilarious when Mary was lamenting the couples splitting up next week and after Nigel asked if he could split from her, she said, “Pipe down English muffin.”

Kupono and Kayla got a Mia Michaels’ contemporary routine about addiction and a Broadway number. The contemporary routine was a powerful piece, but Nigel wished he could see Kayla’s face more instead of her hair. Mary loved Kupono’s intensity and still had them on the train. Tyce said they embodied the whole experience. Their Broadway number was not quite as well received. Nigel wanted them to get into character and Tyce said they could have dug in more.

Caitlyn and Jason got an American foxtrot with a jazzy twist and lyrical jazz for their second number. I loved Caitlyn’s outfit for the foxtrot! Nigel said that she made things look simple, even when they weren’t and Tyce said they looked like stars tonight. After the jazz number, Nigel said he didn’t always see chemistry between them, but Mary disagreed.

Phillip and Jeanine got a weird Russian folk dance and the jive. The Russian folk dance just fell a bit flat and Nigel admitted he wasn’t sure they should have thrown that at them. The judges did love Phillip’s footwork and said Jeanine made it look effortless though. Their jive got rave reviews, with Nigel saying he thought it was Phillip’s best performance of the season outside his style. Mary guaranteed that Jeanine would be around next week and put her on the hot tamale train.

My favorite couple, Evan and Randi may be in trouble this week – well, at least half of them. Their first routine was a hip hop number, for which Randi was praised and Evan was told he needed to find more. Their second routine, the samba, got similar reviews. Nigel said Evan was not a hot samba king, but Randi was hot. Mary agreed Evan could have done more, but Randi was a hot tamale. I hope they aren’t in the bottom three, but I am afraid they will be.

The winners of the night, however, were Brandon and Janette. They could do no wrong with their Argentinean Tango and jazz numbers. Nigel was quiet at first, then stood and applauded and the other judges followed. He said it was as close to perfection as he had seen on that stage – ever! He even threatened Mary if she didn’t put the on the train (she did). After their second routine, Nigel said they have proved that there is nothing they can throw at them that they cannot do brilliantly. Tyce said they have that “thing.”
