So You Think You Can Dance: Top 9 Couples Perform
Shane Sparks was doing double duty this week on “So You Think You Can Dance,” but unfortunately, neither couple did his routines justice. Lil C told Caitlyn and Jason that he didn’t love their routine and Mary likened them to Michael Jackson and Britney Spears – now. Ouch, that hurts. Ashley and Kupono fared no better. Mary called it okay, but Nigel said it stopped as soon as he started enjoying it.
My personal favorite couple, Evan and Randi, got the jive but the judges complained Evan was too smooth. Melissa and Ade got a Sonya jazz routine and Mary said it was time for tough love – it was tough for her to find anything she didn’t like about the routine. Nigel pointed out that Melissa equaled Ade’s strength. Lil C said Ade is everyone’s competition.
Brandon and Janette wowed the judges with their disco routine. Lil C talked some nonsense about labor and the birth of progress while Mary just yelled. Asuka and Vitolio redeemed themselves with a touching waltz that had Mary crying. Max and Kayla did a pop jazz routine. Mary said Max was a surprise and called Kayla a beast on the dance floor. Nigel called her a frontrunner.
Jonathan and Karla, who were in the bottom three last week, came back with a strong contemporary routine by new choreographer Stacey Tookey. Lil C called it buck and Nigel said there were no false moves. Phillip and Jeanine did the tango, but the judges were disappointed in Phillip’s performance. Lil C and Mary disagreed as to whether Phillip’s knees should have been bent (he bent them and that was correct), but regardless, Nigel said this is a learning process and he hoped America gave Phillip time to learn.
