So You Think You Can Dance: Top Six Couple Perform

This week determines the top ten dancers for SYTYCD, who start their tour on September 20th. The guest judge for this week was Mia Michaels.

As usual, there was the good and the bad. Let’s start with the bad first – poor Thayne and Comfort just couldn’t catch a break this week. Nigel was disappointed with their hip-hop routine and they still didn’t have any chemistry on their contemporary routine. Nigel went as far as to say that the contemporary routine deserved better and he would have loved to have seen another couple dance it. Mia said she was backing off on her support of Comfort a bit because Comfort was just riding the competition. You know, these two have consistently been in the bottom three and for a while, you can say it’s a difficult dance or just a bad partnership, but eventually, you have to begin to question the dancers themselves and their ability. I really still don’t see why they kept Comfort over Kourtni last week.

Jessica and Will wowed the judges with their extremely erotic (as Nigel put it) contemporary routine. I loved that dance – it reminded me of one of those polished stone statues of lovers and Mia even alluded to that when she said it was like “human body art.” But, their quickstep – the dreaded quickstep – was not so good. Nigel like everything in the routine except the quickstep part of it while Mary focused on Will’s jacket being wrong.

Twitch and Kherington did brilliantly in their first routine (krump), but fell short on their second routine (tango). Nigel said the krump was honest and Kherington really surprised all the judges. However, Nigel felt that Twitch was uncomfortable with the tango and it lacked honesty. Mary and Mia agreed that the tango was just not happening for them.

Courtney and Gev’s first number was choreographed by Pasha and Anya and Nigel thought it was sexy. So sexy that Mary put them on the Hot Tamale Train! Mia called it “faculocity.” But, their second number drew mixed reviews from the judges. Nigel though it had no substance, but Mary and Mia disagreed.

The hot couples of the night was Chelsie and Mark and Katee and Joshua. Chelsie wore outfits that just made her legs appear 10 feet long and Nigel agreed. Their salsa was hot, but their Broadway number really drew rave reviews from Nigel and Mary. Mary thought it was sexy, sultry, and bluesy. However, Mia thought it showed Mark’s lack of technique and she wanted more movement from Chelsie.

Katee and Joshua (my favorite couple) started out with the Viennese waltz. Nigel thought Joshua was a bit bouncy and Mia said he was a bit clumsy. But they made up for it with their second number, the Bollywood dance. Nigel said he fought for three years to get a number like this on the show. It was weird – kinda Indian, with a bit of an African rhythm to it with some hip hop and Russian dancing thrown in for good measure. It was fun and Mary put the on the Hot Tamale Train.

Well, I think obviously Thayne and Comfort will be in the bottom this week. But, they might be joined by Twitch and Kherington.
