Some pretty good Latin performances tonight on DWTS

I think as the competition is progressing it’s becoming pretty clear who the top dancers are in the competition.  There were some really great performances tonight, some weak performances, and some performances that left me with no strong feelings either way.

Joey and Kym started off the night with a Samba performed to Erasure’s “A Little Respect.”  OK, never in my wildest dreams did I ever think you’d hear an Erasure song on this show.  I had a bunch of their albums on cassette tapes back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.  I thought their performance was great.  He really brings it to the floor and I just loved his black leather fingerless gloves – perhaps trying to give off a more manly appearance for our judges?  Who knows.

Heather and Jonathan were up next with their Paso Doble.  They’ve been in London for most of the week having very little time to prepare for this show.  Is that supposed to evoke some pity or sympathy in the judges’ and viewers’ minds?  All of the celebrities seem to be pretty busy, or am I wrong?  I really didn’t like the musical arrangement of “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” so I think that’s why I really didn’t get any kind of strong feelings about their performance.  The judges gave some great comments about them and their performance – great passion, great job, etc. – but their scores put them third from the bottom tonight.

John and Edyta performed a Mambo.  John came right out and said he never thought he would be in the competition this long.  He’s probably still out there dancing because of his Cheers fan base.  Don’t get me wrong – he seems like a great guy and is really enjoying his time on the show, but he is one of the two weakest dancers left in the competition.

Laila and Maks were up next with a Cha Cha Cha.  I liked Laia from the beginning, but now she is really turning out to be one of my favorites.  She really seems to be a fierce competitor and wants to do her best every time she steps out on the dance floor.  And who doesn’t love Maks?  No, really, who doesn’t love him?  He should have his own calendar or something.  It would sell a lot of copies.

Billy Ray and Karina performed their Jive next.  How in the world did Billy Ray get higher marks than John?  I felt kind of bad for him.  He knows he isn’t the strongest dancer left and he seems almost apologetic for it.  He’ll make it through this week based on his Hanna Montana fan base.

Apolo and Julianne danced the Rumba next, and in my opinion it was the dance of the night.  She is such a great dancer, and everyone knows what a great choreographer she is as well.  Len needs to lighten up.  I thought he was a little stiff when he criticized Lalia and Maks’ funk, but when he started complaining about the chair in Apolo’s performance I wanted to tell him to take a pill.  He does seem to be the elder statesman of the judging panel, but that doesn’t mean he has to act like an old coot.  Come on Len, it’s 2007, give the performers a break on some of the more modern choreography.

Ian and Cheryl performed the last couple dance of the evening, a Paso Doble.  Ian kind of came off looking evil to me instead of intense.  The judges really took him over the coals tonight, telling him that they were disappointed in his performance.  Carrie Ann went as far as to tell him to watch Billy Ray and see how he performs.  Ouch.

The contestants performed a group number tonight, a Swing dance.  It looked like organized chaos to me, and a few celebrities stood out – Joey, Apolo and Laila.  I loved how she lifted Apolo.  And he was such a good sport about it too.

I think that tomorrow night the bottom two couples will be John and Edyta and Jonathan and Heather, with Heather being eliminated.
