Steve Guttenberg
Although Steve Guttenberg is known for his work in movies, on television, and at the theatre, how is he as a dancer? We will find out when he teams up with Anna Trebunskaya this season 6 on “Dancing with the Stars.”
Steve was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 24, 1958. He grew up in North Massapequa and graduated from Plainedge High School in 1976. He attended the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, State University of New York, and the UCLA.
Most people know Steve from movies and television, but he has his acting roots in theatre. His stage appearances include “Prelude to a Kiss” at the Helen Hayes Theatre in New York, “The Exonerated” at the Forty-Five Bleeker Street Theatre in New York, and “The Boys Next Door” at the Camelot Theatre in London. He won rave reviews in “Furthest from the Sun,” co-written and directed by Woody Harrelson. Steve studied under Herbert Berghof and was even a part of The Groundlings comedy troupe.
His first role on television was in 1977 in “Something for Joey.” While still appearing on television, he began filming movies. In the late 70’s/early 80’s, he appeared in The Boys from Brazil, Can’t Stop the Music, and the 1982 sleeper hit Diner.
In 1984, Steve took a role that would be one of his most memorable to fans – that of Cadet Carey Mahoney in Police Academy. He would go on to star in four sequels of that movie. The 80’s were a good era for Steve as he also starred in Cocoon, Short Circuit, and Three Men and a Baby. He would do sequels for both Cocoon and Three Men and a Baby. Steve continued to star in films in the 90’s, but none of them were big blockbuster hits.
By 2000, Steve was back on television, starring in movies such as “Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus,” “The Poseidon Adventure,” and “Meet the Santas.” He also appeared in eight episodes of “Veronica Mars” as Woody Goodman. Steve is currently working on the films Major Movie Star, which co-stars Jessica Simpson, Heidi 4 Paws, Making Change, Fatal Rescue, and Cornered!.
Steve is also actively involved in youth charities. He created Guttenhouse, which is an apartment complex for teens that had complete high school and were previously in foster care. He was selected as the Ambassador of Children’s Issues by the Entertainment Industry Foundation. He is also involved in Sight for Students, which provides eyewear for 50,000 underprivileged kids. Because he cares for kids, he has also ventured into producing and directing. Steve is the executive producer of the CBS School Break Special “Gangs” and the director of “Love Off Limits,” both which deal with teen issues.
In his spare time, Steve likes to surf, golf, and spend time with his dogs. He recently told a reporter from the New York Daily News that he has signed a book deal with Thomas Dunne Books to write his memoir about his early days in Hollywood.
