Steven is eliminated on Project Runway
Spoilers are good things and bad things. For impatient fans like myself, I love to know what is going to happen on my favorite tv shows. But then again it kind of ruins the surprise, thus the title of spoiler. I knew going into tonight’s show that Jack contracted a staph infection and would take himself out of the competition, so there was no surprise there. What surprised me was the reaction from his fellow competitors. All of them seemed truly moved and affected by his infection and his leaving. Makes you wonder if they would feel that way about anyone in this year’s cast or just him? Maybe it’s too early in the season but I’ve yet to see any dissention with any of the remaining contestants except between Ricky and Victorya last week.
The challenge this week was for the designers to give an updated look to a model who has recently lost a significant amount of weight. The models were real women with real bodies and had a lot to be proud of – some of the women had lost more than 100 pounds. The designers were to use their favorite “fat” outfit as the raw materials for an updated outfit. The look should fit the client and their lifestyle, but show the point of view of the designer. Steven drew the short stick (in his mind), getting the model wearing her wedding gown.
Jack realizes he can’t move forward with the challenge and calls his doctor. He’s had skin staph infections before and knows the treatment is kind of unpleasant. The doctor tells him that he needs to treat this infection aggressively. After speaking privately with Tim Gunn, Jack returns to the workroom to tell the others that he is removing himself from the competition. After lots of tears and hugs Jack leaves.
The mood in the workroom is really kind of down and somber. As I mentioned before, all the designers seem to be feeling the loss of Jack. That is, until Tim comes I with a surprise for everyone. The decision was made to bring back Chris March (eliminated last week) in order to keep the level of competition high. Chris is such a loveable and positive person that the mood completely turns in the workroom and people get down to business. Since Chris got a late start on the garment he is given the option to stay and work though the night, which he chooses to do.
I mentioned the fact that everyone seems to like each other this season, a fact that was evident with the designers helping Steven finish his garment at the last minute. Steven was in big trouble so Kevin, Victorya and Ricky I think jump in to help him. Do you think that in season 2 the other designers would jump in to help Santino Rice finish a garment? I think not.
During the runway show my favorites were Kevin, Rami and Jillian. The judges selected as their top three designers Kevin, Jillian and Christian and selected as the bottom three Elisa, Steven and Chris. (Chris mentioned earlier in the show that he did not want to be eliminated two weeks in a row.). The judges named Christian winner of the challenge and he gets immunity for next week’s challenge. Elisa and Steven were the bottom two designers and Steven was eliminated. The judges thought he took a joyous garment and made it dad and somber, very cliché and boring and French maid like. Personally I would have tried to make a slip dress or even a negligee from this garment. I don’t think there were any limitations on what could be made so I’m not sure if he could have gone with the lingerie angle. Anyway, Steven is gone and Elisa stays. It was really a toss up, both of the garments were bad and both of them had been in the bottom in previous challenges.
