The copy is never as good as the original
I know everyone has probably read 400 articles and blog entries on the web comparing Dancing With The Stars and Skating With Celebrities. Well, here’s my two cents worth. I wasn’t able to watch this week’s episode of Skating With Celebrities when it aired on Monday – thank goodness for Tivo. I did finally watch it tonight, and I couldn’t help but compare it to Dancing With the Stars. Unfortunately for Fox the copy is never as bright, vibrant, clear, or just as good as the original.
Scott Hamilton is an awesome figure skater, but being the host of a television show is not his strong point. He doesn’t have nearly as much wit, panache or style as Tom Bergeron. While Samantha Harris on Dancing With the Stars needs a few lessons in manner and grace, Summer Sanders always seems to be struggling to keep the interviews going – or at the very least reading from cue cards. We get the behind the scenes looks into the training of the teams – just like on DWTS.
Fox really tries hard to make Skating With Celebrities hot and watchable, but tonight I was so happy for Tivo. I was able to fast forward through all the fluff and filler. A skate off??? Come on, this isn’t the Salt Lake City Olympic Games and Tai and Bruce and Jillian and John are no Russian or Canadian pairs skaters. Melodrama, yes. Good television, no.
Of course I have to tune in to the final show of the season to see who is crowned champion. How on earth is Fox going to fill an hour show with two couples? We can only hope they will take pity on the few people still watching the show and cut it to half an hour. My vote would be for a 15 minute show but we’ll never see that on network tv.
