The “Group Dance” week on Dancing With The Stars

As I watched the opening of Dancing With The Stars tonight I heard the ominous Halloween music. I thought to myself “oh no, a Halloween themed show AGAIN” but this was not the case (thankfully). It was a week where the remaining seven contestants danced a style of dance they had not yet performed, plus a group number to a 50’s rock and roll song that was for viewers votes only (no judging).

Sabrina and Mark started off the night with the Foxtrot. I’ve said before how I question the music selections and I just didn’t get the choice of this song. Sabrina was really worried about the performance because she was booked up with Cheetah Girl commitments. I think for little practice and rehearsal time she did really well. It was not her best performance in my opinion, but a performance that is less than great for her is still better than the best performances of some of the other dancers still left in the competition. The male judges thought she was too hard and was too aggressive in her Foxtrot, while Carrie Ann loved her. She got a total score of 25.

Jennie and Derek were up next, and they performed the Mambo. A few things crossed my mind during their behind the scenes footage. First, Jennie makes the statement that she is not a performer. I’m sure she meant as a dancer, but huh?????? She is an actress after all, and doesn’t that mean as your way of making a living you perform? Second, Derek tells Jennie to think of Len in his boxer briefs so she is less nervous. There are several pictures that I do not want in my mind, and Len in his Hanes is one that I hope not to have. The judges loved her Mambo. I sat here after hearing their scores (27 total) and wondered if I was watching the same performance. It just did not do anything for me. Of course they are the experts and I’m just your average person watching them on television so what do I know. I thought it was filled with more tricks than dancing; the judges complimented Derek on his choreography. Like I said, they are the experts and I’m only a blogger….

Jane and Tony performed a Jive next. I have to say that Jane impressed me with her performance, in terms of her energy level because it is a difficult dance and she is not the youngest person in the competition. That being said, I thought it was more of a geriatric Jive, and I thought that the musical director slowed up the David Bowie song “Modern Love” for the performance. The judges did not think the dance suited Jane’s strengths, Len saying it was more like a ballerina Jive and Bruno saying it was not her best dance. They gave Jane and Tony a score of 22.

Cameron and Edyta were up with their Samba next. Now I love Cameron Mathison and while I usually love all his performances, tonight what the hell was up with that Samba? Maybe I missed the dancing because I was so distracted by the band aids and dental floss covering Edyta and the pants Cameron was wearing that look like ones in my closet. I think I might have to throw them away since I’ll never look as good in them as Cameron looks in them. The male judges were not thrilled with the performance – Len said they did not capture the feel of the Samba while Bruno said he never thought he’d see Captain Smith and Pocahontas performing a Samba. Carrie Ann loved it, calling it primal and passionate. The judges gave them a total score of 25. By the way, Cameron, can you say spray tan?

Cameron will dance in a thong if he makes it to the grand finale…..vote, damn it, vote for Cameron.

Mel B. and Maks danced the Rumba next. I just don’t really care for the Rumba so to me the dance was nice but not the style I would prefer. The judges loved it. I liked how Mel flirted with Bruno and excluded Len (cranky old dude that he is) but that is all I really liked about the performance. Like I said, my opinion is no commentary on their performance, just a comment on the fact that I dislike the Rumba. Obviously it was great or the judges would not have given them a perfect score of 30. Diva Maks must love that.

Marie and Jonathan were next with their Paso Doble. I thought it was interesting, but I just did not feel the anger and intensity that we’ve seen in other Paso Dobles this season and in the past few seasons on the show. Tom Bergeron said it was the longest he ever saw an Osmond go without smiling; I, on the other hand, thought it was the kind of Paso Doble you might see from an Osmond. The judges were not impressed and gave her a score of 23. Not the lowest score of the night, but almost.

Helio and Julianne were the last couple to dance an individual dance and they did the Cha Cha Cha. Two words can describe this performance……he’s back! Helio was so awesome tonight. Len actually gave him a 10 while the other two cranky judges gave him each a 9; they received the second highest score of the evening with their 28.

The final spectacle of the evening was the group dance choreographed by Christian Perry. Organized chaos might be a good way to describe it. Two couples stood out for me in terms of their lifts/tricks and they were Cameron and Edyta and Helio and Julianne.

Tomorrow night Barry Manilow will be performing in the ballroom. I can only hope that the dancers who perform with him are not conservative Republicans because he might refuse to share the stage with them.

Who’s going home this week? I think it might come down to Marie and Jonathan and Jane and Tony in the bottom two. Whoever stays is going to have their hands full in trying to learn two individual dances next week.
