The Next Great American Band season 1 - the auditions
This week was the first ever episode of the new reality TV series “The Next Great American Band” and in the tradition of American Idol and America’s Got Talent it was the auditions episode. I have to admit, though, that the bands shown tonight were not people just looking for attention. Sure, some of them were less talented than others, but there was really only one or two bands that made me say “huh” when thinking about how they actually made it to the live auditions in Nevada.
The judges for the show are Ian Dickson (a judge from Australian Idol), Sheila E (percussionist and 80’s pop star) and John Rzeznik from the Goo Goo Dolls. The show is hosted by Dominic Bowden, the host of New Zealand Idol. Is it me or does it seem strange that a show titled “The Next Great American Band” has an Australian judge and a New Zealander for a host? Just thought I’d throw that out there.
The judges narrowed down the field of 60 bands to 12 semi-finalists who will begin competing for audience votes next Friday. The bands who made it through are:
Tres Bien
Light of Doom (a group of pre-pubescent boys that look like throwbacks from 80’s hair metal bands)
The Hatch
The Clark Brothers (three children of a family of eleven children who play together)
Dot Dot Dot
The Muggs (the band stayed together after the bass player had a stroke – and he is partially paralyzed but still playing in the band)
Denver and the Mile High Orchestra (in their own words “band geeks”)
Six Wire
Cliff Wagner and the Old # 7
The Likes of You
Franklin Bridge (my personal favorite of all the auditions)
Rocket (the only all girl group to make it through to the semi-finals)
We did get some backstory on some of the bands who made it through, and I’m sure as we go through the competition we’ll hear even more. I’m hooked and can’t wait to see them compete.

For right now Franklin Bridge is my favorite, but that is soley based on the auditions. I think I’m going to need to watch a few shows and see how the bands do with different styles of music to really pick a favorite.
Do you think they’d be able to do a tour the likes of American Idol, or would it be just the winners?
