The Rumba Dance on DWTS
The Rumba originated in Cuba. It is perhaps the most famous dance to have emerged from that region, and it gave way to many sub-dances, including the Bolero, the ChaChaCha, and the Mambo. It is a popular dance, and it is easy to see why. The movements are meant to tell the story of a woman who is attempting to seduce a man by teasing him. It is very sensual and erotic, and throughout the dance you will see quite a few suggestive hip movements and motions. Some call it the most passionate (and sexually charged) dance there is. Read on to find out some of the finer points.
Not much memorization is required to be able to pull off a basic Rumba. Just like any other dance, the man leads and the woman follows. Since the Rumba is about the relationship between the man and the woman, it is extremely important that they are able to work well together, and have good interplay with each other. Their movements are very bodily focused, rather than designed around legwork. They are also direct. You won’t find small whimsical flutters in the Rumba – instead, everything is straight-forward.
If you see someone dancing the Rumba, and they are walking on the heels of their feet, then you know that they have made a horrible mistake. The Rumba should always be walked on the balls of your feet. To do otherwise is the sign of a beginning dancer. The hip movements involved so heavily in the Rumba are performed by shifting the weight from foot to foot, which has a sort of wave effect on the rest of the body. With these waves, the body should be in a constant state of change, always forming to a different shape with completely fluid transitions.
The many moves of the Rumba are so intricate and detailed that you can never truly learn them simply by reading about them. If possible, you should attend dances where you know that experts will be performing the Rumba. Therefore you will get a first-hand look. Other options are to watch instructional videos, or to get private lessons in the dance. Trying to figure it out on yourself probably won’t work, unless your goal is to create a new dance. So if you are passionate about the Rumba, look into getting proper instruction today. It is well worth it to be knowledgeable in such a fine art.
