The Search for Elle Woods: The Auditions
Girls from all over came to “be” Elle Woods on Broadway, but only ten would make it through the first night. The large number was narrowed down to 15: Cassie O., Emma, Rhiannon, Bailey, Rachel, Autumn, Natalie, Mary, Cassie S., Lindsey, Celina, Lauren, Libby, Chloe, and Mara.
Those 15 had to show off their skills to the judges – Broadway actor Paul Canaan, writer Heather Hach, and casting director Bernard Telsey. They were looking for a girl who could sing, act, and dance. First up, all the girls learned some choreography then five at a time performed. Some were good and some were not so good. The judges were afraid that girls would shine in one area, but falter in another.
After practicing the song “So Much Better” with vocal coach Seth Rudetsky, they each had their turn to sing. Paul said Bailey was “a hit!” while he felt Cassie S. was “too sexy.” Rhiannon’s last note (which was a long one) scared the judges and Mary and Chloe messed it up.
The judges said it was hard to decide, but in the end, they cut Mary, Mara, Rachel, Libby, and Chloe. Those remaining in the competition – Cassie O., Emma, Rhiannon, Bailey, Autumn, Natalie, Cassie S., Lindsey, Celina, and Lauren – all got to ride in a limo to Broadway to meet the current star of the show, Laura Bell Bundy.
