The Search for Elle Woods: The Judges Cut Natalie
Wow, how this week changed things. The call sheet was for the girls to go to the John Barret Salon at Bergdorf Goodman. That’s right – the girls were going blonde (or blonder as it may be). This seemed to equal the playing field, with several of the girls worrying about Natalie having a bigger advantage now that she looked more the part. After the makeover, they went to the Soho Studio and met with Laura Bell Bundy. She tried to help them get in touch with their inner Elle. Then they were photographed by Dan Hallman. The standout performer would be someone who used the Elle accessories the best, since all the girls had on the same dress and shoes. Dan and PR guy Michael Hartman picked Natalie (oh, kiss of death there) because she chose a different pose, standing on top of books. Personally, I wasn’t all that impressed with her photo, but whatever. She got to go alone to a lunch date with Emmet understudy Andy Karl.
The challenge this week would be to sing the song “Legally Blonde” with Andy, so that was supposed to give Natalie an advantage, but you know this season, winning the standout performer award has rarely proven to be a good thing. When Seth saw the girls, he was impressed with the blonde hair (did he really ask them if the curtains matched the carpet?). During the auditions, Autumn, who has struggled lately, admitted she was not good at auditioning, but Seth told her to think of it as a 3 minute performance and you could just see the clouds clearing above her head. She really wowed the judges with her performance, with Bernie saying he got a little chill. Bailey was told her performance was a letdown because it didn’t pop and Paul said she used her hands too much. Natalie was told by Bernie that he was just not seeing Elle Wood’s in her and Heather said she was very talented, but just one note. Lauren did fairly well, with Bernie saying it was “great” but Heather said she was a bit closed off. Rhiannon hit a wrong note and Bernie said they were really starting to worry about her vocals.
Haylie told Autumn and Lauren they were safe, which meant Bailey, Natalie, and Rhiannon were going to the casting office. They told Bailey she could stay, but that it was a warning that she needed to bring something special to the next audition. They told Natalie that she had the big voice, but Rhiannon had the sparkling personality. Bernie then told Natalie they just didn’t see her as the next Elle Woods.
