The Waltz

The Waltz is one of the oldest styles of ballroom dance, and still has enormous popularity to this day. It can be traced back as far as 1680, to Germany. The composer Johann Strauss was making new and interesting music at the time, and the Waltz was perfect to accompany it. So as Strauss grew in popularity, so did the Waltz. It became particularly fashionable in the 18 and 1900s.  Nowadays, you can find the Waltz in every corner of the world. In addition to seeing it in its regular form, you can find hundreds of other dances that grew from its style.

Waltz, rather than focusing on upper body movements, hip movements, or bouncing around during steps, focuses on the most simple concept of dancing: steps. Waltz patterns consist of just several components. These include walking steps, side steps, and dramatic sways. The simplistic nature of the Waltz make it not only easy to learn, but also one of the more elegant dances. If you are a graceful person, then you will no doubt succeed at the waltz, as it helps to dance with the round, soft, and flowing movements that make the Waltz easy to recognize.

Since the Waltz is so popular, it is fairly easy to recognize its current modern following. In almost any town, you can find local groups who are enthusiastic about dancing, and will get together to dance with each other in a casual environment. You can also find lessons or classes to teach you the basics. So if you are interested in the Waltz but you have no way to learn it through experience, you should try to take advantage of one of those resources to become more familiar with the dance, its moves, and its subtleties. Watching experienced dancers is probably the best way to learn its nuances.

The proliferation of the Waltz is also apparent when you look at how many versions of it there are. If you go to a ballroom today, you will probably see the Viennese Waltz, which is an adapted quicker version. The International Standard Waltz was developed to allow couples from different regions to dance together and know fully what to expect from the other. Various other regions and countries have their own Waltzes, including Peru, Mexico, and Venezuela among others. This large variety leaves you with many different choices when you take up the Waltz for yourself.
