Third night of competition on Dancing with The Stars

The third night of competition on Dancing with the Stars had the celebs and partners performing either the Paso Doble or the Rumba.  I do have one comment about the costumes on the ladies – during the intro I noticed a lot of cleavage showing and thought if there was ever to be a wardrobe malfunction then tonight would be the night.

Here’s what I thought about the performances tonight, in the order the couples danced:

Toni and Alec were up first, performing the Rumba.  I thought it looked kind of mechanical but the judges totally disagreed with me.  Len said that he was surprised how good the performance was; while Bruno said she captured both sensuality and vulnerability.  Carrie Ann also loved the dance, saying that she moves like she sings.  However, the “lift police” were back in town, and Carrie Ann pointed out that there were two lifts in the performance (which are not allowed).  Toni ended up with a 23 out of 30 and had she not done the lifts she most likely would have gotten 8’s across the board.

Brooke and Derek were next, dancing a Paso Doble to the music from the diamond commercial (the “diamond is forever” ones).  I thought it was great, and even my husband thought it was fabulous.  They got such nice comments from the judges that I thought for sure we’d see 9’s – Carrie Ann said she was truly mesmerized and that it was amazing while Bruno said she was born to dance – but in the end they only got a 24 out of 30.  Bad judging in my opinion.  Bad, bad judges.

Rocco and Karina danced third, performing a Rumba.  Poor, poor Rocco.  To me he looked like an animal stalking his prey instead of a man trying to seduce his woman.  The judges agreed.  Bruno was extremely harsh in his comments, saying he was just standing on the stage like The Thing, and the fact that he only had four days to learn the dance showed.  Carrie Ann was more tactful, saying that it was a nice try, that he had passion but lacked musicality.  Len made a really bad cooking analogy, saying that Karina gave him all the ingredients he needed but it wasn’t a very tasty dish.  The judges gave them a score of 16 out of 30.

Lance and Lacey performed a very non traditional Paso Doble to the song “I Kissed a Girl.”  I know what this couple is trying to do – as they said keep true to themselves – but I really didn’t like this performance at all.  It had absolutely nothing to do with a Paso Doble with the exception of the few traditional steps they threw in the mix to keep Len happy.  Well, it didn’t work.  It ticked Len off so much that he said he had nothing to say about their performance.  Carrie Ann said she had never seen anything like it before on the dance floor, while Bruno said that this dance, above all others, demands a traditional style which Lance abandoned in favor of hip hop.  Hearing these comments you’d think he’d be getting really low scores, but instead got 20 out of 30.

Kim and Mark were up next, doing the Rumba.  Tom Bergeron made a comment how Kim disappointed the judges last week but the band and crew were quite happy with her performance to “Baby Got Back.”  I don’t like the reality show (I think it’s about rich, spoiled brats) but I kind of feel bad for Kim.  She seems as if she’s trying hard but it just isn’t working for her.  Len said he was disappointed in her because she has so much potential, while Bruno said her performance was colder and more distant than Siberia.  ( I was very close to Siberia once – and yes, it is cold and very distant and probably a good analogy in describing the performance).  Carrie Ann said she needs to watch the video of her performances since she thinks like she’s done the same performance three times.  Her scores were low, with the judges giving her 17 out of 30.

Misty and Maks.  I don’t think Misty knows how to do anything in life without a bit of attack, and she really attacked the Paso Doble this week.  At times I thought her performance was a bit scary – the intensity she would have on her face with the very freaky make up and 80’s style hair – but the judges liked it.  I thought for sure that they would get higher scores after hearing the judges comments – Bruno compared her to Xena, Warrior Princess while Carrie Ann said she definitely stepped up her game this week while performing a very ambitious routine – but the judges only gave them 21 out of 30.

Maurice and Cheryl.  Their Rumba was really kind of strange, in my opinion.  Bruno hit it right on the head when he said that he thought Maurice should be smooth and slinky but instead gave a very rough and clunky performance.  Carrie Ann said he was too stiff and holding back, while Len said he could talk the talk but couldn’t dance the dance.  They ended up with a score of 19 out of 30.

Cloris and Corky.  This week Cloris got a talking to by Corky – he reminded her that they had the lowest scores the previous week and that they had to put in some actual dance steps to beef up their score.  It backfired with Carrie Ann.  She said that she loves Cloris’ wit and that she missed it in the performance.  I’m not sure exactly what Bruno was saying about it but I did catch the word surreal.  Len said it was a lovely, traditional dance to traditional music and a nice attempt at the Paso Doble.  They ended up with a score of 15 out of 30.

Susan and Tony were up next, performing the Rumba.  The dance kind of bored me, and I was surprised when it was over.  I didn’t like it or dislike it and that’s a problem.  The judges thought she did a good job.  Len said it was an actor’s dance and she acted it very well.  Bruno said it was a very good Rumba but she’s still dancing a bit like the virgin queen.  Carrie Ann thought it was smooth and elegant.  Hearing these scores I thought for sure that their scores would have been higher, but they ended up with 21 out of 30.

Warren and Kym danced next, doing a really powerful Paso Doble.  The judges loved it.  Bruno said that for a guy of his size he has really good footwork.  Carrie Ann said it was dynamic and powerful and fantastic.  Len said it had a lovely dark and menacing feel about it, and was a well done Paso Doble.  The judges rewarded them with a score of 24 out of 30.

Cody and Julianne were the last couple to perform this evening, doing the Rumba.  I thought it was a really good performance, maybe the best of the Rumbas done tonight.  Bruno said that it lacked some focus and that Cody has the talent to do well but just needs to learn some control.  Carrie Ann said it was an age appropriate dance – it had an innocence to it that was attractive.  Len thought it lacked a bit of polish and finesse.  They ended up tonight with a score of 21 out of 30.

I’m not sure who is going home tomorrow night.  Cloris is in danger just based on the scores, and I don’t know how large of a fan base Maurice has that can carry him forward.  Kim is going to have a lot of the popular vote (her Mambo was one of the most viewed clips on the internet this week) so she’ll be around for a while, even with her low scores.  I think it’s anyone’s guess as to who will go home.
