Tim Gunn

Tim Gunn is the fashion expert who mentors the contestants on Bravo’s reality show “Project Runway.” He was born in Washington, D.C. on July 29, 1953. He received a BFA in sculpture from the Corcoran College of Art & Design. He began work at Parsons in 1982, serving as Associate Dean from 1989 until 2000. Tim was a department chair of Fashion Design at the famed Parsons The New School for Design from August 2000 until March 2007.

In 2004, Tim began working on “Project Runway” and was an immediate hit with the fans. His catchphrases “Make it work” and “Carry on” are well known. He became so popular that in September 2007, he was given his own show on Bravo, “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style,” on which he uses his fashion acumen to help turn subjects into polished, fashionable individuals.

No content with having two television series, Tim is also an author. His first book, A Guide to Quality, Taste, and Style, co-written with Kate Moloney, was published by Abrams Image Publishers in 2007. Interviews with Tim about fashion have appeared in such magazines as Time, Newsweek, Crain’s New York Business, Martha Stewart Living, ELLE Magazine, Women’s Wear Daily, and People Magazine. He has appeared on “Rachael Ray,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The View,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Entertainment Tonight,” “The Colbert Report,” “The Megan Mullally Show,” “Live with Regis and Kathie Lee,” and the 17th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Tim also made a special guest appearance as a reporter for Fashion TV on the ABC hit show “Ugly Betty.”

After leaving Parsons, Tim announced the he would accept the position of chief creative officer at the Liz Claiborne Inc. At the end of April, Liz Claiborne Inc. announced it would establish a $350,000 scholarship for students in the fashion design program in honor of Tim. The scholarship gift was announced at the 59th annual Parsons Fashion Benefit and Fashion Show. During the show, Tim was named an honorary chair of fashion design at the school.

On April 27, 2007, Palm Desert, California declared the day to be “Timothy M. Gunn Day” in honor of his visiting the city.
