Top Chef Finale

I was a bit disappointed with tonight’s finale.  We saw Marcel go against Ilan.  The chefs go to choose two sous chefs from Michael, Mia, Betty, Frank, Elia, and Sam.  I kinda feel like Sam set up Marcel.  Oh, don’t get me wrong, I am not taking Marcel’s side.  I think anyone who would have working with him would have hated it.  But when Sam told him to choose Michael, it seemed like a set up.  I mean serious…Michael?  Unless he had more teeth removed and was on drugs again, I don’t see it.  Of course, Marcel couldn’t pick Betty or Frank – both had verbal altercations with him (as did most of the cast).

So Ilan chose Elia and Betty and Marcel chose Michael and Sam.  Was it an accident that Michael and Sam didn’t load all of Marcel’s food?  I don’t know.  It just looked suspicious.  Especially when Sam told Marcel to just go with the palm then took credit for it in front of the judges.

Marcel complained that his team fell apart and Sam and Michael said Marcel kept them in the dark. Meanwhile, Team Ilan was having a big old lovefest.  Ilan told the judges Marcel should be more respectful of the people he works with and I agree.

Ilan ended up winning, but, I think maybe Marcel was the better chef.  He took more chances, tried new things – he was just a pain in the butt to work with.  He told the judges he wasn’t there to make friends and I don’t think he did.  Even Elia, who had been on his side the whole time, turned on him in the end.  But, I came away from the show not really convinced that Ilan was a top chef.  He stuck to what he knew (Spanish food) – was that too safe?  I don’t know, I mean I am sure both menus were delicious, but I just don’t feel what Ilan did was superior to Marcel, strictly cooking wise.  Maybe it just all came down to Marcel serving the salad.  If his vinegarette drops had worked, would that have given him the edge?
