Top Chef: Jesse and Hector Leave
There was a surprise on this week’s “Top Chef.” The high stakes of the quick fire wasn’t $15,000 for the winner, but that the loser would go home. And, they had to cook escargot for Daniel Boulud. Many of the chefs were nervous, but Mike I., Kevin, and Jennifer were named the top three, with Kevin being declared the winner. The bottom three was Jesse, Ashley, and Robin. Tom gave them a second chance though. They had 20 minutes to cook an amuse bouche and would be judged on that. Jesse, who had been teetering on going home the entire time, was the loser and had to pack her knives.
For winning the quick fire, Kevin got to sit out the Elimination Challenge and eat dinner with some of the finest French chefs. Along with Daniel Boulud and Hubert Keller, there was legendary French chef Joel Bobuchon. The contestants were paired up with one having to make a classic French protein and one a classic French sauce.
The best dishes were those of Jennifer and Michael V. and Bryan and Mike I. Yes, the brothers were once again on top. The judges ended up declaring Bryan the winner for his trout.
You would have thought Mattin would have killed this competition, but he ended up in the bottom three with partner Ashley, another permanent bottom dweller. Also on the bottom were Hector (because his meat looked butchered and was cooked unevenly) and Ash (because he ran out of time to put enough sauce on the meat dish). Mattin tried to throw Ashley under the bus, saying it wasn’t his call to use the asparagus. True, I think it was her idea, but you don’t do your partner that way! The judges felt that even if Ash had gotten enough sauce on the plate, it couldn’t have made up for Hector’s beef, so he was sent home. He was not happy – he just left without saying anything to the judges or others at Judge’s Table.
