Top Chef Masters: Anita Lo is Eliminated
The “Top Chef Masters” quickfire proved to be disastrous for most of the chefs. It was the dreaded blindfold taste test. I guess the regular Top Chef contestants have an advantage to do better at this as these chefs are established and set in their styles, but I was surprised how poorly they did. Of the 20 ingredients they were given (my husband and I decided we could identify ketchup, almonds, corn, and peanut butter), Hubert got five right, Anita and Rick got six right and Michael won with a whopping seven. He got 5 stars, Anita and Rick were given 4, and Hubert got 3 1/2.
The elimination challenge was to cook a buffet lunch for 200 entertainment insiders. The chefs got to choose 3 sous chefs from previous Top Chef contestants. As the chefs interviewed them, all decided they didn’t want to work for Michael because he was too demanding. Jamie had worked for Anita before and no chef wanted Spike – he was the last chosen. The venue was changed at the last minute from a dining room to a terrace and once at the terrace, each chef had to let one sous chef go for an added challenge.
While Rick and Hubert were eager to let the sous chefs take over certain aspects while Anita and Michael were reluctant to let go. That probably put them on the bottom. Rick trusted Richard with the dessert and that really impressed the judges. They were also impressed with the amount of food Hubert presented.
Hubert ended up winning the challenge, but only because all three judges gave him 5 stars each. He gets another $10,000 for the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Anita and Michael were on the bottom, but despite the judges not liking his seafood, he was able to beat Anita to make it to the finale.
