Top Chef: Ron Is Asked to Pack his Knives
The “Top Chef” contestants were pretty bummed that Mattin was gone and a few even said it should have been Robin that left. They wore red bandannas in honor of Mattin – everyone except Robin, who discretely wore her bandanna in her pocket.
The Quick Fire challenge was to create a duo of dishes representing the angel and devil in the contestant. Poor Ash only got one of his custards done, which landed him in the bottom three. Bryan was told his execution of his dish wasn’t good and Laurine was told she brought nothing new to the table with her dish. The judges loved Michael’s dish, saying it was executed perfectly. They also loved how Eli used brown butter on his scallop, but it was Robin who was declared the winner. Robin had a salad and apple crisp and explained to judge Michelle Bernstein that when she found out she had cancer, she got into the raw food movement for her health. Eli was a bit crass by saying afterwards that Robin only won because she brought up the word “cancer.”
The Elimination Challenge was to deconstruct a classic dish that chefs chose via knives. Penn & Teller came in to deconstruct a magic trick for them. I love Penn & Teller. Toby Young was back too and the chefs were nervous about that.
Jennifer was worried about pulling meat lasagna, but pulled it off somehow and found herself with the favorites. Also among the judge favorites were Ashley and Michael, but it was Kevin who was declared the winner.
The least favorites were Laurine’s fish and chips (the judges didn’t like that she didn’t really have any fries), Ron’s Paella (the judges didn’t think it was very deconstructed), and Ash’s shepherd’s pie (which had no mashed potatoes). The guys had been worried about Ron’s dish and rightfully so – he was sent home.
