Top Design - Chef’s Table Challenge

The challenge was to create a chef’s table for a mystery chef. The designers were told he had an eclectic style and liked arts and crafts and natural fabrics. But, he also enjoyed mid-century modern. The room was supposed to be high-end and luxurious. The designers were given a $42,000 budget with which to work.

Carissa – ever the complainer – was worried her carpenter would mess up her $10,000 table. I loved both Matt and Andrea’s rooms. Goil’s was kinda okay, but weird. Michael and Carissa’s were just terrible. When I first saw Michael’s room, the word “yuk” came to mind and Carissa’s was just too bare. Matt was lucky, he had an extra hour because he won the last challenge.

The mystery chef turned out to be Tom Colicchio from Top Chef. He felt Matt’s room was chic and he loved the leather flooring. He said Goil’s room seemed mismatched, but Goil tried to play it off as if he did that on purpose. They did like Goil’s chandelier made of flowers though. The judges loved Andrea’s room, saying it was luxurious and seemed like a place you would want to stay. The judges thought Michael’s room was empty and flat and said his carpet looked like it came from an airport. In Carissa’s room, the judges said they saw table and nothing else.

Tom selected Andrea as the top design, which was tough for me because I liked Matt’s a lot too. I think the competition is between those two right now. Between Carissa, Goil, and Michael, it was Michael who was told he could go. He just seemed to be so defensive and have such an attitude, I think that, in addition to his flat room, turned the judges off. But I am glad they told Carissa they were tired of her drama and excuses!

I agree with everything you said about Carissa. I was so sorry that Michael was sent home - I actually liked him and I thought his artwork representation of hunger was kind of cool. However, I just don’t think that would work in an upscale private dining room. How about her attitude saying that she wasn’t packing her bags because there was no way she was going home! Hello. No one is safe anymore.

Andrea’s room was beautiful. As soon as I saw it I could imagine it in an upscale restaurant. I wondered about the white chairs though - they could get messy. And Matt’s floor was really cool, but how do you clean a leather floor after someone has spilled food or wine on it?

After last week I started to think that Matt could be the contestant to beat. Now I’m pretty sure that it’s going to be between him and Andrea to see who has the Top Design.

I agree Katie, that it is between Matt and Andrea. I’ve liked Goil’s ideas since the beginning, but while he may have one cool idea for his room, he seems to have a hard time bringing the whole thing together :-(
